International Roma Day Edit-a-thon 1-15 April 2024
On the occasion of International Roma Day, April 8, Wikimedia Serbia and Wikimedia CEE Hub are organizing the fifth global edit-a-thon in which Wikipedia volunteers around the world will write and improve articles on Roma minorities, their identity, history and culture. By spreading the knowledge our goal is to combat still-too-common barriers of prejudice and discrimination that they face too often while accessing employment, education, health care, public and social services and other areas of life. Roma people, Europe’s largest minority, have a rich history and they have made considerable contributions to the societies where they live. Their artistic and cultural heritage is all too often ignored or unnoticed, so we are hopeful that this campaign is a step closer towards reducing of the injustice. This year, we are expanding this event to Wikidata and Wikiquote.
The International Roma Day is a day to celebrate Roma culture and raise awareness of the issues Roma people face daily. We invite you to get in touch with Roma institutions and members of the Roma population in your countries and to introduce them to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. In previous four years, more than 200 participants wrote a total of 787 new articles, while 83 articles were improved on more than 20 language editions of Wikipedia. Also 61 items on Wikidata were created and 209 were improved. We hope for your participation in large numbers this year as well.
