Iranian Wikimedians User Group

The Iranian Wikimedians User Group is a community of volunteers focused on improving and expanding Wikimedia projects in Iran and among the Iranian diaspora. This user group is dedicated to enriching Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects among Iranians by spreading the ideas of free knowledge, for instance, through educational lectures, training and editing workshops, and essay writing competitions.

Objectives

1. Promotion of Wikimedia projects and free content in general;
2. Outreach work in schools and universities with Iranian students and through social media to teach Iranians about Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects;
3. Edit-a-thons to help Wikimedians to enrich content;
4. Participation in different cultural events such as Nowruz festivals in different countries;
5. Conducting photography contests such as WLM, WLE, and etc. ;
6. Support Iranian diaspora contributors to build their community.

Projects

2015

• Ran a successful fundraiser to create a unique font for the Persian Wikipedia and its sister projects (Reports: 1 , 2 , 3 , 4)
• Organizing monthly online Edit-a-thons on the Persian Wikipedia to improve collaborations among volunteers
• Outreach program: Start a Telegram channel to promote Wikipedia among readers

2016

• 500K article milestone ceremony in Tehran
• Participation and having presentation at SFD 2016 to represent WMF projects
• First nation-wide conference in Ahvaz

• Education Program at 2 universities

2024

• 1 Million articles celebration
• Wikisource workshop: Zero to Hero (Online meeting)
