Johannesburg City Library edit workshop
The Johannesburg city library (JCL) edit workshop was a collaboration between the WikimediaZA and the Johannesburg City Library where members of the public along with JCL's book club members were invited to take part in writing Wikipedia articles about books they've read and reviewed at the JCL's book club and to raise awarness about Wikipedia and that it can be edited and accessed in different languages other than the English Wikipedia.
After long deliberations between the two organisations the date was decided on 5 December 2019, this was also combined with the Johannesburg city library end year function in order to minimize cost and maximize the number of library staff and book club members who were going to be available on the day. And in total 32 participants turn out in the event.
Proposal for the event
editBackground
edit- Wikipedia is an online encyclopaedia that allows any member of the public to collaborate and create encyclopaedic articles, edit and share them for free charge. Wikipedia articles covers a wide range of subjects from history, politics, science and technology to religion, culture and notable people.
- The Johannesburg city library’s mission is aligned with that of Wikipedia because it is a hub of information for the Johannesburg community and Wikipedia relies on the library’s information for its references, it also has an active book club which reviews all topics covered on Wikipedia.
Aim
edit- The aim of this proposal is to host an edit workshop with the book club members and have a book club end year closing party afterwards. This will raise awareness about Wikipedia and the role played by the City library.
Theme:
