The Karavali Wikimedians User Group organized an inspiring event titled "Tuluvas Aati Month Documentation Demonstration and Discussion" in collaboration with the local community and folk artists. This initiative was part of the broader Wiki Edu Program, aimed at educating the public about preserving and safeguarding cultural heritage.

The event saw the participation of over 10 artists and more than 55 community members, including a large number of women and children. Attendees watched the documentation on a big screen, making it an engaging and immersive experience.

The event successfully brought together experts, community members, and artists to highlight the importance of documenting living heritage, with a special focus on the traditions and rituals of Tuluvas during the Aati month.

  • Emphasis on Documenting Living Heritage: Dr. Vishwanatha Badikana highlighted the importance of safeguarding living traditions and their role in cultural continuity.
  • Mr. Vijeth Maithadka from Sullia shared insights into community-driven efforts in preserving folklore.
  • Mr. Yadupathi Gowda emphasized that the dance performance, which involves visiting houses, is not a begging practice. Instead, it showcases the living heritage and unique traditions of the community. The Mugera Aati Kalenja is a cultural expression that is unparalleled in the world, found exclusively in Puduvettu, Belthangady.
  • Dr. Kishore Kumar Rai provided an insightful explanation of the Aati celebrations and rituals specific to Kasaragod, a region in northern Kerala. He elaborated on the unique traditions and cultural practices observed during this auspicious period, highlighting the distinctiveness and significance of the celebrations in this area. The region's Aati rituals reflect the rich heritage and cultural diversity of northern Kerala, making it an integral part of the broader Tulu cultural narrative.
  • Karavali Wikimedians felicitated three artists: Mr. Vijeth, Mr. Kunha, and Mr. Sheena.
  • Bharathesha acted as a moderator and engaged in a discussion with a group of participants. A detailed discussion was held with the artists to understand the difficulties they face during their performances and the challenges they encounter in preserving this traditional art form. The conversation also delved into uncovering the reasons behind these hurdles, shedding light on the factors affecting their ability to sustain and showcase their cultural heritage effectively.
