Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group/Activity plan/October 2024 - March 2025

Kashmiri Wikimedians has supported the work of Wikimedians in Kashmiri Language and acted as a catalyst for advancing the Wikimedia movement in Kashmiri language and the broader region of Kashmir Valley. We have conducted a series of edit-a-thons previously in collaboration with other Wikimedia entities, and organised several projects related to movement strategy in . Our regular community calls have helped us realise that we lag behind in basic infrastructure and that our efforts are scattered. More recently, we started Koshur Collective, a collaborative initiative with DCW as for the development of Kashmiri language's larger digital landscape. This helped us envision development of a sustainable activity plan, which is described below.

This plan envisions activities for 6 months starting from 1 October 2024 to 31st March 2025; and is dynamic in nature.

Workshops

edit

We plan to organize six online workshops over the next six months. These workshops will be a skill-building initiative for both new and existing users. We will cover everything from the basics of Wikipedia editing to advanced activities such as template creation and administrative tasks. Our goal is to train the new editors and increase the skills of existing users. We aim to impart admin level know to the users so that they can handle the projects in future.

  1. 10/10/2024 The first workshop will focus on account creation, article creation and navigating Wikipedia.
  2. 10/11/2024 The second workshop will cover the Content Translation Tool, notability criteria, moving articles and procedures for requesting deletion or move.
  3. 10/12/2024 The third workshop will be focused on Wikimedia commons and uploading media to Commons.
  4. 10/01/2025 The fourth workshop will be focused around Wikidata.
  5. 10/02/2025 The fifth workshop will concentrate on template creation, editing modules and translatewiki basics.
  6. 10/03/2025 The sixth workshop will cover on wiki administrative tasks.

Photo Events

edit

We are planning to support individuals for photo walks in which they will be capture the local Kashmiri heritage and make it available on Wikimedia Commons. We will train the users in workshops before we plan for the photo event. Our aim is to upload at least 200 media files to Wikimedia Commons.

Edit-a-thons

edit

We are tentatively planning two edit-a-thons during this project. We will develope a theme eg. river of jammu and kashmir and encourage participants to create articles on these topics. These edit-a-thons will help us to improve the content about a specific theme and also improve the content on Kashmiri Wikipedia. The tentative timeline is as:

  1. Edit-a-thon related to human settlements of Jammu and Kashmir including villages and cities in Nov 2024
  2. Edit-a-thon related to people from Jammu & Kashmir in Feb 2025

We aim to improve at least 500 articles during these edit-a-thons. The top users will be provided token of appreciation.

Meetups

edit

We are planning to organize a local offline community meetup tentatively in December 2024, after consulting with users to determine the best available date. During the community meeting, we will discuss the issues facing our community and explore solutions. This will also help strengthen the bonds within the local community. We will organize a translatewiki-thon during the meetup, focusing on translating the interface of Kashmiri Wikipedia. Our goal is to translate at least 100 core messages.

Website for Usergroup

edit

As part of our annual plan, the Kashmiri Wikimedias User Group aims to develop a dedicated website to enhance our community engagement and outreach efforts. This website will serve as a central hub for information about our activities, events, and initiatives, providing a platform for members and supporters to stay informed and connected. It will feature resources, project updates, and opportunities for collaboration, aiming for a stronger network within the Wikimedia community. By establishing an online presence, we seek to promote our work, attract new contributors, and streamline communication, with partners outside Wikimedia. The website will help us establish a point of contact with other organizations in Kashmir that share similar goals.
