Kwara State University Wikimedia Fan Club/International Mother Language Day 2024

The observance of International Mother Language Day annually commemorates the rich tapestry of native languages worldwide, fostering the promotion of national identity and linguistic diversity on a global scale. This significant event is traditionally held on the 21st of February each year, serving as a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating our linguistic heritage.

Details of Event

edit

This event will take the form of a month long campaign where editors constituting secondary school and university students, educators, librarians and indigenous language speakers will participate in edit events that promote linguistic and cultural diversity. This is to encourage participants to disseminate the knowledge and information regarding their mother language. Not only this, the event will enhance the participant's promotion of their linguistic identities by creating Wikipedia contents on their linguistic heritages and their oral literary practices. More specifically, participant's will contribute new articles on the Yoruba Wikipedia by documenting their oral literary practices, and cultural aesthetics to promote the Yoruba language visibility. The contributions of participant's include the promotion of the national policies and practices as regards the Yoruba, Barbara, Fulfude and Batonu languages and cultures, including the various linguistic Institutions to promote the learning and knowledge of these languages.

Stakeholders

edit

The stakeholders for the campaign include students, educators and Librarians in Kwara State. This event is a collaboration among the Kwara State Wikimedia Fan Club, National Library, Kwara State Branch, the Educators-- Principals of selected secondary schools in Kwara State, Ilorin Metropolis specifically; and indigenous language experts-- Yoruba, Nupe, Fufulde and Barba.
