What problem does this solve?

edit

This Learning Pattern is intended for any WMF-funded group that wishes to hire a consultant to join their team. It is based upon the experience of the Art+Feminism's hiring process for the role of Program Coordinator.

What is the solution?

edit
  • Drafting a job description
  • Outreach: Give yourself plenty of time to think about which communities would yield the best applicants for the job you're advertising, with an eye to diversity, equity, inclusion and globalisation. Where you post a job description will have a dramatic impact on what kind of applicants you attract. You can see a detailed description of Art+Feminism's Outreach here.
  • Interviewing: Develop a fair and equitable approach to interviewing. Once you have received all applications, make sure to draft a manageable process that will be sustainable for all team members and ensure that applicants are selected fairly, based on pre-determined criteria. You can see a detailed description of Art+Feminism's Interview process here.
  • On-boarding: Be intentional about how you on-board and manage new consultants or staff members. Have a plan in place for how to handle HR issues, payments, etc. It is helpful to have a designated point-person on the team to manage any staffing-related issues that may come up.

Things to consider

edit
  • A good hiring practice takes time and forethought. Do not skimp on these!
  • The Wikipedia movement has a diversity and equity problem. Bringing more women and more people of color into the movement is only beneficial to the movement in general.

When to use

edit
  • When hiring a new consultant or employee.
  • When trying to troubleshoot how to manage a new consultant or employee.
