Learning patterns/Identifying articles for translation
What problem does this solve?
editThe Wikipedia Gap Finder allows you to choose the starting language and the target language. Once the languages are selected, recommendations appear based on gaps in the target language Wikipedia and the importance of articles in the source language. The results show articles missing in the target language. They can be refined using the ‘search for articles to create’ tab. With this you can search for an article in the starting language, and the results will show similar articles which are missing from the target Wikipedia.
For example, looking for articles to translate from English into Scottish Gaelic produces suggestions including Kirk Douglas, Democratic Party (United States), and Trans-Pacific Partnership. Using the search function find a particular topic area produces different results. ‘Scotland’ gives suggestions for Languages of the United Kingdom, Culture of Scotland, and Scotland in the Middle Ages.
Searching for ‘castle’ produces suggestions including Castles in Great Britain and Ireland, motte and bailey castle, and even castle - showing that this area is particularly underdeveloped.
