Vision | Where we're headed |
---|---|
Mission | What we do to get there |
Guiding principles | How we behave and make decisions on our way there |
Values | Why we're going there in the first place |
The framing that we use for the 2016 discussion invites you to think of values in terms of the core intrinsic beliefs that drive us towards our vision.
In practice, this means that we go through thinking cycles about what motivates us, and we ask ourselves "Why is this a good thing?" If it's a good thing because it's in service of something else that is good, we repeat the process and ask the same question. If it's a good thing because it "just is", we have reached a core intrinsic value.
Here's our invitation: Think about why you became a Wikimedian, and why you contribute to the movement. List those reasons, and try to find the hidden reasons behind each of them. Ask the "Why is this a good thing?" question recursively; when you can't answer the question any more, you've reached one of your core values.
