MediaWiki talk:Articlefeedback-field-wellwritten-tip

I don't understand the question. Are we being asked to rate the source page or the translation? If the latter, is this being asked in English to non-English readers? If not (as I hope), shouldn't we adapt the message also in other languages (e.g. MediaWiki:Articlefeedback-field-wellwritten-tip/it)? Nemo 21:01, 30 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Nemo! Some background on the intent: this page is part of the setup for a test case where we're exploring repurposing the article feedback tool to get feedback on translation quality. We're going to be trying this out for the 2011 fundraiser by incorporating the feedback tool into the bottom of the fundraiser translation pages on meta, for example the Italian translation of Brandon's appeal. Translation pages will be linked from a translated appeal on a donation landing page. I agree with you that the messages for this tool should be adapted into other languages as well, though at this point its a very early test of the use-case and readers who also understand English are the ideal target. Still, will keep this feedback in mind if/as we move forward with more work on the tool, its a very good point, so thank you for mentioning it. Siko 18:33, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Ok. Keep in mind that if you don't translate the message to other languages locally, users with that language set will see the default one, which is the translation of the English message you altered and asks a different thing. Nemo 18:57, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- No, if the message set in this wiki differs from that in the repo, it will show the custom message (this one) instead of the translation. My interface is set to Norwegian, and the messages that are set here trump the translations for the extension. That said, it would be nice to have these translated, but that's not a priority at the moment. Jon Harald Søby (WMF) 19:53, 31 October 2011 (UTC)
- Ah, ok, sorry then. I was confused by Is the translation written in good idiomatic style for the target language?, which shows me also non-English default messages. Nemo 03:22, 1 November 2011 (UTC)
