Catégorisation du projet Wikipédia dans toutes les langues

Bonjour tout le monde (English version follows this one if you can not read French)

Why am I so talkative, now if I want translate it for all of you who cannot read French, it will take me time... :D

Hello everybody (I probably made some mistakes in this translation, please correct them if you can)
I come here on Meta for the first time because I would like to submit an idea supposed to solve a non negligible problem that I’ve found out a few times on the French version of Wikipédia (Wikimedia Foundation’s Wiki on which I’m the most active). After a discussion more or less long in the bistro (=forum on the Wikipedia French version) in which I describe my problem, some users and me concluded that Meta could probably be the right place to solve it. Hence I’m gonna give you a summary of it but if you want to read the original discussion, it’s here fr:WP:LB#Wikipédia et le système de catégorisation.
Since I started to contribute to Wikipedia, I've mainly focused my efforts on improving articles but now more and more I get interest on Wikipedia project organisation itself. And the key feature of Wikipedia, it is that everything is organised with categories. So for a better understanding, I thought I had to start from the root category and at this point I had some troubles. In fact, I needed some time to understand that Wikipedia French version (FR) organisation related-categories are unsound. So I gave a glance on the similar categories of the English version (EN) and I immediately saw that it’s more clear and right. And so eventually here is what’s wrong:
On FR, fr:catégorie:Wikipédia is used in a way like a junk room though on EN a separation is clearly announced as soon as the beginning: the en:Category:Wikipedia category is used to collect encyclopaedic articles about Wikipedia (like en:Wikipedia for example) and the top-level category to organise the Wikipedia project is en:Category:Wikipedia administration. On FR there is no equivalent category Wikipedia administration!!! (here is the reason why I couldn’t understand…). So firstly, what I thought and suggested in the Bistro, it was that FR adopt the same organisation model that EN (with the idea that the solution would probably be the using of bots for renaming categories). The first reactions were some FR/EN troubles but without real importance and it was probably due to my not really clear explications at the beginning.
And then finally I had the idea that leads me here. I thought that the solution to this problem would be to establish a new namespace (that would be called WCategory for example) and that would allowed to separate classical categories (I mean those we use to structure the knowledge like mathematics for example) from categories only used for organising the Wikipedia project. According to me, this solution would have the advantage to make all different language versions of Wikipedia had this same organisation (because I think this organisation does not dependent on language). Currently I don’t know exactly how these categories are organised in all different language versions, but I supposed it could only bring benefit (as for FR it’s sure!!).
Concretely if we look for example on EN, the category en:Category:Portals it would become en:WCategory:Portals as well as currently en:Portal and en:Wikipedia:Portals articles are dissociated. Because even if it’s right we probably never need a category called en:Category:Portals to categorise articles about portals (of course I don’t speak about those of Wikipedia) but for the homogeneity, it shouldn’t be used for Wikipedia organisation. Yes it’s the namespace principle. It’s like when we separate en:User:Cat and en:Cat.
So to conclude, my idea is that all different languages versions of Wikipedia establish a new namespace (of course, WCategory is just an example, it is possible to chose what we want) or if it is impossible, it would be a similar system allowing to provide a similar separation of the two kind of categories. Voilà, thank you very much if you read my explanations till the end :-) 16@r 21:45, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
Bonjour/bonsoir. On some of the wiki sites I contribute to (mostly Wikipedia Maori and several Wikia), there is a category with a name like "Administation of this site". It sits under the "top" or "root" category alongside the "knowledge" categories. Here's an example: http://genealogy.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Administration_of_this_site. Isn't that enough? Changes to the Wikipedia portal

I'm posting here to notify the broader community about some changes at Www.wikipedia.org template/temp that are ready to go live to the Wikipedia portal. Following the discussion at Talk:Www.wikipedia.org template, a few users have worked out a way of giving more prominence to language editions that've reached 100,000 articles but aren't one of the ten largest editions. Previously this wasn't a problem, because only the Top 10 had 100,000 articles or more.

Original proposal: "laurels of fame", with Russian just below the logo

The original proposal was to move Russian to the top of the page, where the Top 10 surround the Wikipedia logo, because leaving the link in the 10,000+ list leads visitors to assume that Russian has about as many articles as much smaller wikis, such as Georgian. Arguments against this move focused on the changes we'd have to make once Chinese and other editions reach 100,000 articles.

Ultimately, the unstable version of the portal was modified according to my proposal: create a new 100,000+ list of wikis that includes the Top 10 plus Russian. With this approach, visitors hopefully aren't as confused when a language reaches 100,000 articles and gets promoted (predictably) to the next list.

If you use one of the browsers listed at data: URI scheme, you can test out the current layout:

  1. Paste the source text of Www.wikipedia.org template/temp into the large textbox at The data: URI kitchen.
  2. Click on Generate, then click on the link that is generated.

Please comment on this change; with just a couple users' opinions so far, I don't feel comfortable making the new layout live yet, since I'm a relatively new admin here, and countless Wikipedia visitors will be seeing the portal.

Medical translations

Dear Board of WikiMedia:

I am an argentine pychologyst who worked many years as a translator in health and psychological dissemination -in the media. I'd like to participate in your effort but appreciating that you assign me to translate some of the following subjects :

  • Medicine, Health, Environment and all its related matters.
  • Psychology, Psychiatry and Psychoanalysis in all of its expressions.
  • Sociology, anthropology and related matters, avoiding if possible : politics.
  • History, Geography, and related subjects.

I'd also like to know how could I mention this serious activity in my Life Sheet or CV if you prefer it. Is this possible ?.

Glad to find new friends in the Media adventure, I remain

Cordially Yours.

Vìctor.

Dear Victor,
I am not part of the board, but part of the people who care about translations. The board does not cover this very specific area, but leaves it up to us to organize ourselves. As much as I understand from what you write you would like to translate from English to Spanish - well, that is not a problem. Just go to the portal for medicine on the English wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portal:Medicine and start to search for interesting artilces there. On the left hand side you find the interwiki links to Spanish. Anyway you then need to check on http://es.wikipedia.org that this page does not exist and if it does not you can simply translate it.
We sometimes have requests for translations, but these are more wishes (some of these translations are really needed and a group of us wants to cover exactly these), since doing translations within these projects is "doing work for fun" without being remunerated, everyone of us chooses what he/she likes to do and does it when he/she has time to do it.
I hope this helps. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us here again.
To the others: I used normal links here in order to facilitate it for Victor to understand where things are since the interwiki at the beginning can be a bit confusing.
Cheers, Sabine

Aromanian wikipedia

We'd like to change the "Armâneashti" title on the roa-rup.wikipedia.org with "Armãneashce". Go to roa-rup:Special:Allmessages and search in the list for the text that you want to replace, then follew the "edit" link at the left of them. Bilingual templates for translators

I have a problem with the bilingual templates ... that is: I don't like them since they get to big and will create a huge mess when we want to use the same templates for all projects (uploading them with the bot). It would mean that basically we would have 200 x 200 = ca. 40000 templates - considering all wikipedia languages + using two languages on the template simply creates double work with the localization of it. The template needs to be created in such a way that we get one template that is valid for all wikipedias - so that on the local wikipedias they only need to localize some subtemplates to get things correctly. Instead of creating double work we should think about how to minimize work and maximize results. Now I know that the objection will be: but we do not translate among all that languages - and there I say: at this moment we do not ... but only having 50 languages to consider we have 50 x 50 = 2500 templates ... I am trying to find a way where wikipedias will need to do things only once and where we will be able to use the translated language names in database format like we have them on WiktionaryZ. Thank you for taking the time. (Posting the same to the discussion page of the templates) --Sabine 13:24, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

Dutch wikipedia

Hi! I heard that the Dutch language is undergoins some spelling reforms courtsey http://taalunieversum.org/, and that new spellings are valid as of 1 Aug 2006. Is wikipedia nl: going to update to the new spellings, or is there a proposal to create a new nl: wiki? Nichalp 22:20, 21 September 2006 (UTC)

There is no proposal to create a new nl:wiki. These new spellings will flow in the different articles in due time, also some bots are set to work on it. Imho the amount of real mistakes in spellings is a bigger problem then a not too big difference in spellings before and after the reform. Londenp 08:52, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Is there any reason not to lock that page immediately and reopen it on Incubator with eg. language-based subpages? Aliter 17:11, 3 October 2006 (UTC)

Cross-wiki ban?

Briefly, there was/is a user on WikipediA called "User:Primetime" who was banned (by Jimbo!) for notorious copyright violations. He's since been banned on the Spanish WpA, and according to another user (Who I'll let tell the whole story) he's been active on other WMF projects. See Vandalism reports#Primetime for the full story. As mentioned there, this user has an account here (User:Primetime). I reccomend and suggest that he be banned here (Or at least the account blocked). 68.39.174.238 01:16, 4 October 2006 (UTC)

This is a correct description. Primetime has been a duplicitous plagiarizer, and has engaged in off-Wiki harassment of editors who have tried to curtail his activities. Unfortunately, banning his accounts seems to slow him down only slightly. -W:user:Will Beback 04:07, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
I also forgot to mention what he's alluded to: He's a notorious sockpuppeteer. Just the same, I suggest this account be blocked and any future ones be so as well to prevent him causing trouble on this WMF wiki. 68.39.174.238 21:31, 4 October 2006 (UTC)
I've been bold and blocked him. MaxSem 13:01, 7 October 2006 (UTC)
Thanx dude. 68.39.174.238 07:39, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Well, it seems to be fine in this case, the account has been blocked. But I by myself know another cases like that and would support the idea given above. If there is an account banned on one wiki for more than (say) 6 months (that happens not so often), he should be appear in a list somewhere, maybe here in meta; other wikis and projects can see and deside to do the same. It seems to be in a contrary to some ideas of wiki, but it is not. Especially those users from smaller wikis, who vandalise and disrupt the work, have accounts also in en: etc., and after having been banned in a small wiki, they continue their harassement in other projects and nobody knows the background. There is a difference between doing good deal here and disturbing it on the other side. -jkb- 08:49, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
Two things, first of all, common logic also backs up jkb's assertions. It's very rare and logically unlikely that a person would be such a chronic disruptor on one wiki that they get banned, and be even passable on another. Examples of these cross-wiki vandals include the already mentioned Primetime (English and Spanish), MutterErde (English and German, also for copyright violating), The Middle East Conflict Man (English and both Norwegians), and very likely others.
Secondly I'm suspiscious of User:Stockmiles, who'se only edit... was to remove the comment I added to User:Primetime. I might add that this is a hallmark of Primetime, leading to his usepage on eN getting protected. 68.39.174.238 01:06, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Transwiki/Interwiki template center

Wikipedia has a few templates for linking from articles to Wikibooks. Their number has been changing. First we had a number of templates that all did pretty much the same thing. By use of ParserFunctions most of these were merged into w:en:Template:Wikibooks but the obsolete templates still exist on other projects (wikt:Template:Wikibookspar, s:Template:Wikibookspar, commons:Template:Wikibookspar).

In addition to this, some wikibooks may start creating customized templates for individual wikibook projects so given the rapid changes in these and the difficulty in propogating changes and preventing unhelpful branching, the idea arose in conversation between me and another Wikibooks editor to put up a "master copy" at Wikibooks for other projects to refer to.

Expanding on the idea, I wanted to see if there had been an attempt at a similar project, but with a broader scope — creating a larger repository shared by all projects. I did some archeology on Meta and found an attempt to maintain a list of template duplications. It's close, but doesn't quite fit what we had in mind. The list has been inactive and apparently never took off so I've staged a coup to change it to fit the master-copy idea.

I've outlined the proposal on Template duplication and I now request the community's comments on it. --Swift 20:14, 5 October 2006 (UTC)

User pages that imitate look like articles

I was going to ask if there shouldn't be a wikipedia.org-wide policy (or precedent) against user pages that imitate articles? Then it occurred to me that a similar problem might be that draft articles in userspace get picked up by search engines (a random example)? Maybe pages in userspace should be configured to make it much harder for unaware/naive readers to mistake them for articles? --83.253.36.136 12:41, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Our projects all follow the principle that, although users are allowed a certain freedom in using their assigned user pages, technically those pages do not belong to them (as the material submitted must be released under the GFDL license). There are limits to what users can do with "their" user pages, and any abuse needs to be reported to local Administrators or even to the local community, so that it can be dealt with. Because all our projects utilize the GFDL license, this reality applies to them all already, in spite of any variations regarding the degree of leeway that users are allowed in using those pages. Redux 05:00, 9 October 2006 (UTC)
Yes, but what about drafts and other legitimate pages that look and read like articles, but aren't? Is the string "User:user name" enough to make the reader aware of the difference, if for example the user name is Astronaut and the page name is Spacesuit – User:Astronaut/Spacesuit ? The difference in coloring between articles and user pages is very subtle on the English Wikipedia, and nonexistant elsewhere. Should user pages carry "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia"? Just something to think about. --83.253.36.136 00:38, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
I think nobody will have problems with a page like User:Astronaut/Spacesuit. But I know more pages whos name is Astronaut although the real name is User:Astronaut - the namespace has been hidden. And this can be very irritating for many users. -jkb- 08:52, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

It is not possible to retrieve the password, as it is irreversibly obfuscated upon entry into the database.
