MediaWiki:Gadget-renameQueueReason.js needs hotfix

Per phab:T196268 - a UI change was made in CentralAuth extension. Now global rename interface doesn't populate reason field automatically. Please replace the content of MediaWiki:Gadget-renameQueueReason.js with this hotfix :

if ((mw.config.get('wgCanonicalSpecialPageName') === "GlobalRenameQueue") && document.getElementById('mw-renamequeue-reason')) $('input[name="reason"]')[0].value = 'per request';

Request for Rollback rights on Meta-Wiki

Hello,

Growing in the WM movement, I've had so many encounters with vandalism and used my little undo capability to fix such issue. This usually happens on Meta and MW.org. Sometimes, I face multiple vandalism so it's difficult to undo and I see the need for a rollback right. In this regard, I request for a rollback right so as to facilitate my helping the community to combat vandalism. Thanks

Notice to administrators — consideration of application of autopatrol right

Special:Abusefilter/161 has been implemented in a rather strict means to stop the editing of another person's user page. This has come about due to local abuse and the consequential impact upon global user pages. For the history please see the archives of this page, and reviewing the filter itself.

Consequences of the filter as written is that it restricts the ability of general users without administrator- or bureaucrat-allocated rights from reporting spambots or direct abuse by new users. With this filter, the means to allow trusted users to mark problematic pages is to allocate the autopatrol right.

If the administration of this filter is problematic, then we can look to changing the filter to manage the acceptable users by other means; or let us restart the conversation and look to the manner and amount of abuse that we will accept, the process to removal, and our tolerance for abused user pages to show globally.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:29, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

This is a very sensible measure. – Ajraddatz (talk) 22:39, 1 May 2018 (UTC)
It is new, but most of the stops are legitimate, for a few false positives (namely the tagging of pages for speedy deletion) the quick fixes are the give the taggers autopatrol if they warrant it - that way they are able to proceed in the future. — xaosflux Talk 11:16, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
Agree with Ajraddatz & Xaosflux. I suggest to use user_rights-->autopatrol instead of contains_any->user_groups-->array --Steinsplitter (talk) 13:10, 2 May 2018 (UTC)
@Steinsplitter: agree, optimized to that. — xaosflux Talk 13:57, 2 May 2018 (UTC)

What do you mean by feast? Matiia (talk) 17:09, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
I mean setting the filter up and observing a rapidly growing log. But I fortunately returned soon enough to help mitigate some adverse effects of it. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 19:41, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
I think we are still being a bit aggressive on this one (though it IS catching lots of nonconstructve edits), perhaps exempting users that are (autoconfirmed + 20edits) or the like would be sufficient. Any thoughts? — xaosflux Talk 19:52, 9 May 2018 (UTC)
I don't think that we are at that point. Looking deeper at the interactions, I think that 20 is too low, especially looking at who is prowling around, and the assessment of their behaviour at other sites.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:44, 13 May 2018 (UTC)
As a comment, this is stopping amounts of IP edits on user pages, and vandalism of user pages. It is also stopping some users editing bot pages, and some labelling spam pages, and where appropriate patrolling rights are allocated. [Personally checking filter daily, and responding daily].  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:10, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

My old friend from en.wp?

This guy, possibly, seem to be active on my talk page on wikiquote.org, and on he.wp. (Earlier tonight they were active on my commons page.) I'm not sure if it is "my old friend", or not; it might be an impersonator. In any case, please protect my user pages, Thanks, --Huldra (talk) 02:23, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Root user pages are protected by abuse from irregular editors.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:35, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Nope. The text is still visible on he.wp, and in the history on .wikiquote.org, --Huldra (talk) 02:42, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
@Huldra: this page is only for help with issues here on the metawiki. hewiki has 39 admins, and enwikiquote has 25 that could help you there. If you are requesting a global block, you will need to post at: Steward_requests/Global. — xaosflux Talk 02:55, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
A global block is of virtually zero help...as he gets a new IP in no time. What I need is a global protect on my user pages, --Huldra (talk) 02:59, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
You are at Meta asking about user pages, so my replace needs to be meta root pages are protected. Pages at other wikis need to be requested at local wikis, as not under meta admin management.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:07, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Well, I have been asking for a global protect (of my user page) forever...that doesn't seem to be going anywhere. So while I'm no longer harassed on en.wp (it is permanently semi protected), I am harassed at commons, wikiquote, de.wp, he.wp, and here. And there are what, a hundred or two more wikiprojects where I can expect his harassment. To ask for protection on each and every one of those wikis is simply not feasible (I don't even speak/understand Hebrew). A global semi protect of user pages is much needed. --Huldra (talk) 20:52, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

@Huldra:. There is no easy global protection available—well not one that I am willing to apply without clear instruction from the community, and without horrid precedent.

I am asking the following for good governance reasons, not through doubt. Can you please point to examples of where you have had your user pages abused outside of home wikis, and wikis where you do not edit. Pointing to the respective deletion logs would be most convenient.

It should be possible for us to write a global filter that will be limiting people creating user pages on those wikis that are covered by global abusefilters (noting that global != universal, as global filters do not run on most big wikis). I would not want to write a filter that limits any actions by those with advanced rights at a local wiki, nor limit editing to any existing pages, as they are controlled by local wikis, so should be outside the terms of this discussion.

Noting that this is not a usual practice to write filters for an individual's protection. It should also be seen as not setting a precedent for how these matters should be handled, and this sort of intervention should be as light as possible at a global level. So prior to implementing such a measure I would expect a level of consensus by stewards/global admins/meta admins that this is a reasonable and practical action; and it is without an outcry from the community. (I am not certain that this is the ideal page to have this conversation, and suggest that Stewards' noticeboard or SRM may be more appropriate if we are looking to utilise global abusefilters in this way.)  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:23, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: Here is the log from Hebrew wikipedia (which I dont edit, as I dont speak Hebrew), Here is the history (still not oversighted) on wikiquote.org, another wiki which I have never edited. And here is my deleted page on de.wp (another wiki which I dont edit), deleted due to "Vandalismus". (You can also see the lots of deleted edits on my home wiki, that is en.wp, but that has ..thankfully... been semi protected for years. My commons logs, my meta log, Meta talk logs).
All of this really started about 3 years ago, when I got a SUL account...--Huldra (talk) 23:40, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
(outdenting) I don't think creating global abuse filter rules for protecting userspace pages with one title (one user) is a good idea at all. — xaosflux Talk 15:36, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
Why not? --Huldra (talk) 22:04, 4 June 2018 (UTC)
As billinghurst said, global abusefilter does not apply on all wikis despite the name, and it consumes limited server resources that should be (IMO) better spent with more generic rules. — regards, Revi 10:02, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
If there is any compelling reason to do so, (technically) stewards/meta admins can prevent that specific pagename from being created with Titleblacklist - but I'm not sure if this is a good idea. I think we are setting a bad precedent. (And I agree if we want to do something @ global level this should be moved to SRM or SN.) — regards, Revi 10:02, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Help with announcing a consultation

  Resolved.

Hi, I'd like to call Creation of separate user group for editing sitewide CSS/JS to the communities' attention. That involves getting it translated, and sending out messages to the village pumps (see plan here). I'd like to request either a translationadmin's / massmessager's help, or the required permissions for a couple weeks. I'm a translation admin on mediawiki.org and occasionally send messages via the command-line version of MassMessage (which I can use as a developer with shell access; it is however not as useful for large-scale notifications like this) so I know how to use them.

Thanks! -- Tgr (talk) 17:51, 23 June 2018 (UTC)

I feel that page should be a subpage of Requests for comments (but CSS/JS should be changed to CSS & JS or something else to avoid creating another subpage). Thanks. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:05, 23 June 2018 (UTC)
I think there's an expectation that an RfC is a decisionmaking process while a consultation is not, which is why I tried to avoid calling it an RfC. --Tgr (talk) 16:41, 24 June 2018 (UTC)
Community Consultation seems to be a doublespeak way of inviting an RfC. Killiondude (talk) 06:44, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

@Tgr and me have talked about this on #wikimedia-dev today. This is not really a consultation but a notification that the changes are going to be implemented, but with the communities also able to post feedback on the changes. In my opinion, this should be clearly said in the introduction of the page to avoid people thinking this is a proposed technical decision.

About rights: Tgr asked me if I could grant him massmessage-sender and translationadmin permissions temporary for a month or so. I have no issues. I am filing Meta:Requests for translation adminship/Tgr. Ideally the permissions could be granted together to expire both at the same time. He requests two months.

Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:13, 26 June 2018 (UTC)

@Matiia: Do you think we can speedy-grant Tgr both massmessage-sender and translationadmin at this point? Thanks. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:58, 27 June 2018 (UTC)

 2. The user is possibly not specific or has mistaken ideas about blocks. If his/her IP is under hard block on a specific site (Meta-wiki or else), then s/he can’t edit; it’s independent of status of his/her account.
Either exact MediaWiki message shown to the user or the user’s IP (note that publishing of the latter infringes privacy) can be helpful. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 09:24, 28 June 2018 (UTC)

@Theklan: I must confess that I am not sure if that'd work, and I'd hate to ruin your hard work. Please let me ask @Base and Kaganer to see if that can be done. Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:58, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
I don't understood, about what images this question? --Kaganer (talk) 17:06, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
@Kaganer: <translate></translate> instead of . They want to be able to use different files on the translation pages as they have translated versions of them. Would that work? —MarcoAurelio (talk) 17:09, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
No problem. If filenames is not standartized, may be used this way. Or maybe better next code:

If filenames is standartized (as example, 2017-2018 ikasturtearen balorazioa.pdf, 2017-2018 ikasturtearen balorazioa de.pdf, 2017-2018 ikasturtearen balorazioa en.pdf etc.), may be used template lm. Example of code:
2017-2018 ikasturtearen balorazioa|pdf}}|thumb|<translate>Irakurri hemen balorazio hau PDF formatoan</translate>
In this case translated version will be substituted automatically.

@Theklan: Good choice ;)   Done. --Kaganer (talk) 17:42, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
@Kaganer: Some images weren't marked for translation. Now they are, I think the page needs to be reloaded or something.-Theklan (talk) 07:51, 10 July 2018 (UTC)
