Strategy Salon

edit

To help assess the Wikimedia movement's impact in the last 15 years, and reimagine its goals for 2030, a series of Strategy Salons were organized all over the world. Odia Wikimedians User Group brought together most active Wikimedians from the WikiTungi Bhubaneswar, and representatives from WikiTungi Puri, and Nalconagar along with some experts for a day-long brainstorming engagement on July 30, 2017. Three Wikimedian-coordinators moderated the sessions and three non-Wikimedian experts that have contributed largely on community engagement, media research, and publication joined as resource persons.

Making Wikimedia community a more inclusive place by bringing in more students, veterans especially educators, opening the influx of knowledge from other language Wikimedia community members are some of the areas most participant unanimously aspired to change.

Sections
  • A - Direction: Improving the content quality by regular engagement with the community—the [Wikimedia] community have to empathize for the readers that are seeking important and factual information on Wikimedia projects.
  • B - When new contributors always tend to be in a hurry to create more content, existing and experienced ones always have to redirect them to better the quality of their contribution.
Priorities
  • 1 - There are many local challenges related to technological infrastructure (Wikipedia editing app is buggy and crashes even more for many non-English Wikipedias), partnerships (Wikimedia communities and affiliates are yet to partner with the government departments that have resources but are creating more mess by adopting proprietary and outdated technology).
  • 2 - Relicensing government websites so that the User Group can get (reliable) data directly both as source and citations
Section Priority Summary Statement Overall sentiment Keyword or phrase
A 1 Need for app development for editing Wikimedia projects: Local technical challenges like problematic Wikipedia app needs to be fixed as a significant portion use mobile devices to edit. Neither the official Wikipedia app on Android nor the Desktop mode in phone is stable. supportive App editing challenge
B 2 Low quality Wikipedia content because there are only a handful of citable sources that exist on the Internet when it comes to regional topics. Partnership with mediahouses, publishers and other content producers is a top priority concern Grow citable resources of local relevance
A 2 Building educational resources for new contributors, welcoming back inactive old contributors, and diversifying the community by bringing veterans (people who have access to educational resources, computer, and are retired from jobs) supportive Stronger community support

A more detailed report can be found on the Salon page.

edit

Thanks to the efforts of Odia Wikimedian Subas Chandra Rout, 847 medicine-related articles, second largest number next to English up to date (September 30, 2018), written under the scope of the WikiMed Project besides 39 other long articles. There are also 65 more articles listed for further improvement. Santali

edit
Fagu Baskey, the most active editor of Santali Wikipedia during the time of recording shares his experience from the first ever Santali Wikipedia workshop in India at the North Odisha Universiry, Baripada, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. In this interview with another Santali editor Ashwani Banjan Murmu, he shares his plans for growing the Santali Wikipedia community by organizing more outreach sessions, and collaborating with editors dispersed across eastern India.

Some of the contributors of the Santali Wikipedia, which is currently in the Incubator, reached out to us seeking help in organizing a workshop. Three editors including two administrators worked with three active Santali Wikipedians from Odisha, and organized a workshop at the North Odisha University, Baripada, Mayurbhanj, Odisha. With support from CIS-A2K this workshop brought together nearly 30 new contributors. Though it was challenging—to teach all the new editors about the input tools, and basics of Wikipedia—all in one session, there was quite some productive engagement. The community that is currently spread across India, Bangladesh and Nepal are sharing resources with each other, to reach out to more people, and bring the project out of Incubator. Odia Wikimedians User Group was fortunate to contribute a little part in enabling this.
