This survey was conducted to evaluate the perceptions of Africans about African medicinal herbs.
In December 2022, we met with the Wikimedia User Group Nigeria to discuss the possibility of collaboration with them. We wanted to collaborate on projects that would impact Wikipedia. But we wanted to start with intangible heritages, such as oral traditions. African medicinal herbs were suggested since there is a gap in contents relating to African medicinal herbs on Wikimedia and other Wikimedia projects . We were advised to conduct a survey to help shape the direction of the collaboration.
In January 2023, we conducted a survey to evaluate the perceptions of Africans about knowledge relating to African medicinal herbs as a form of intangible heritage. This is to understand the extent to which people would find knowledge relating to African medicinal herbs useful on Wikimedia projects.
The survey respondents agreed on the following:
- Knowledge about African medicinal plants would be useful
- African medicinal herbs is essential to heath
- They know a particular herb(s) used for treatment
The survey respondents disagreed on the following:
- There are sufficient information about African medicinal herbs
- Theu know the medicinal herbs contained in the preparations they take
The survey respondents recommended the following:
- Knowledge about African medicinal herbs should be documented and preserved
- The use of African medicinal herbs should be encouraged
