Open GLAM Toolkit

This is an outline and working document designed to present resources to GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) professionals. As this document takes form, it will likely be moved to another resource.

Introduction

edit

Galleries, libraries, archives and museums around the world are opening up datasets, documents and other digital assets to enable the creation of innovative web and mobile services and to promote use of resources on the broader web. These issues involve not just looking at technical issues with structuring metadata and moving files, but also considering licensing options for opening up their data and implications for existing business and revenue models.

Definitions

edit
  • GLAM - an acronym for Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums, the cultural heritage institutions
  • Open Content - a neologism coined by David Wiley in 1998[1] which describes a creative work that others can copy or modify. The term evokes open source software, which is a related concept in software. From Wikipedia.
