Primary School Edit-a-Thons

As part of the Wiki Primary School outreach project Wikimedia ZA in partnership with the University of Cape Town hosted 3 edit-a-thons. The first of the three event occured on the 5 December 2015, with follow up events on the 19th February and 26 February. All events were held at the American Corner at the Central Library in Cape Town, South Africa.

Cost : Absolutely free

Canceled events

Initially all events were to be held at the University of Cape Town. However due to ongoing disruptions and protests (see Fees Must Fall and Rhodes Must Fall) that took place at the university and carried on until the end of the year and into the following year. The university responded to these protests by shutting down thereby forcing us to continuously postpone the events until we decided to find an alternative venue instead. The following edit-a-thons were planned for but had to be canceled:

  • 31 October 2015: Postponed due to University protest action (which also brought about a safety risk and we were not allowed to use University resources)
  • 7 November 2015: Postponed due to University protest action
  • 14 November 2015: Postponed due to University protest action

5 December 2015

This edit-a-thon was a bit of a disappointment as none apart from the trainer (Discott) and the American corner staff showed up. We decided to put out a general call to the public in the library inviting them to join us for the event. Two people showed up and we were able to commence with the edit-a-thon. Following this event we put out the call to our network of librarians. This ensured that future events were better attended as the majority of attendants were librarians who heard of this event through this network. The planned event for the 12 December 2015 was postponed to the 19th February 2016 as the school year had just ended and there was concern that most teachers would be away on vacation.
