Baniwa Wikipedia

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval and will verify the test project content with a reliable neutral source, such as a professor or expert.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code bwi (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Baniwa Language name in English
Language name Baniwa Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q3501735 - item has currently the following values: Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.

Links http://www.ethnologue.com/show_language.asp?code=bwi Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Continent/City "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

edit

The w:Baniwa language is one of the three main languages spoken in the w:São Gabriel da Cachoeira municipality in w:Amazonia, w:Brazil, apart from the national language, w:Portuguese. It is also spoken natively in w:Colombia), and by several local communities as an L2 (having the status of a local trade w:Lingua Franca. Along with w:Nheengatu and w:Tucano, Baniwa was recognized as a co-official language by the Brazilian State in 2002 (law nr. 145/2002 of 11 December). Although it has a relatively low number of speakers (est. 7000), there is a thriving interest in the development of educational resources and literature in Baniwa by its native speaking community, along with a higher orthographic normalization. As I am not myself a speaker of the language, my role here is solely that of facilitating the process of creating a Baniwa Wikipedia in the first place, since some solid interest in its creation was shown. This proposal is being made in tandem with that of http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Baniwa]], as it falls under the exact same conditions. The third language under the same conditions Nheengatu, already has its own http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Nheengatu. Pastorica 07:01, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Arguments in favour

  • In a few weeks' time, there will be a long summer school by the Federal University of the State of Amazonia, in its local São Gabriel da Cachoeira campus, which will have as attendants teachers that are native speakers of, among others, Baniwa. This request for the creation of a Baniwa Wikipedia comes in this context, as it will be the perfect opportunity to gather the local community of people with interest in creating, maintaining and using a Wikipedia for Educational and knowledge-building purposes. Both the organizers, teachers and member of the local community showed great interest in the possibility of having such a powerful tool at their disposal. Alongside with this, having a collaborative project like a Wikipedia would be the perfect means to attain common grounds for a more fixed spelling. Pastorica 07:01, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
