Proposal summary
Please read the handbook for requesters for help using this template correctly.

Fiji Hindi is a language that is spoken by all Fiji citizens of Indian origin and also by many people of other races (in districts where Fiji Indians are in a majority). This language developed in Fiji about a hundred years ago from the different dialects spoken by the Indian immigrants and has also been strongly influenced by English and Fijian languages. There are some 460,000 first language speakers of the language of which 150,000 reside in Australia, New Zealand, United States and Canada. A Fiji Hindi Wikipedia will provide this diaspora with an opportunity to maintain a link with their mother tongue and also the next generation with an understanding of their heritage.

Arguments in favour

edit
  • Support - this is actually my native tongue and yeah it is spoken by over 400,000 people in fiji which makes up over 45% of the population and is quite distinct from normal Hindi and Fijian languages...--Cometstyles 12:10, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - Fiji Hindi is the language which unites all the Fiji Indians. Hindus have tried to teach their children to write in Hindi using the Devanagri script and Muslims have tried to teach their children to write in Urdu, using the Arabic script but all can communicate with each other in written form by writing in Fiji Hindi using the Roman script. Abdul kadir 06:17, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - Fiji Indians make up a large proportion of Fiji citizens as well as the international Fijian diaspora: they are a recognisably unique culture with a unique language and a vibrant iternational community making this project highly viable. --Mattbray 01:22, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support - Although Fiji Hindi is mother tongue to 460,000 people, it has no official support - the Fiji Government does not support it (not taught in Fiji schools), educational institutions do not support it. Individual writers have been doing it on their own to write in the language. Wikipedia is a very good place to document, maintain and develop the language and also to record the history of Fiji Indians. Thakurji 03:42, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Surely a very good possibility for the people to improve their writing skills in their language and to preserve the language. --Thogo (talk) 10:31, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Very similar to the other Hindi project. So, there can be a lot of volunteers from other Hindi projects as well.
  • Support - There are more than 500 pages already in the test project. There are some some very dedicated and regular contributors. The number native speakers is close to half a million. 210.11.188.12 00:38, 13 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Support : Fiji-Hindi is the mother tongue and lingua franca of nearly all descendants of indentured labourers who came to Fiji from different parts of the sub-continent, India. It has suffered intellectual indifference and linguistic prejudice due to lack of archival research and mainly ignorance of the vast linguistic changes in the syntax and semantics of this beautiful language. Its close alliance to Awadhi and Bhojpuri render it as a real and a living language of Fijians of Indian descent living in Fiji and those of the diaspora. Gina 26 Feb, 2014.

Other discussion

How do you write Fiji Hindi in the language itself .. Am I correct in expecting that the language is written in the Latin script ?? Thanks, GerardM 12:59, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is written in the Latin (or Roman) script. Although Fiji Indians have been speaking the language for the past 125 years, it is only since the mid 1970s that they have started writing in the language and all writers use the Latin script. Girmitya 03:10, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

With the completion of translation into Fiji Hindi of most-used MediaWiki messages, all the criteria for final approval have been met. Girmitya 09:55, 12 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Script

edit

Can we have Devnagari as an alternative script in the same way as Cyrillic/Latin/Arabic is used in Kazakh wikipedia?--Eukesh 17:54, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Initially the project team prefers the use of Latin script but future translation into the Devanagri script remains a possibility Girmitya 10:17, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Project requirements

edit
I have had another look at the messages and changed some. It should be noted that Fiji Hindi itself contains many English words, for example the months of the year (and their abbreviation) - so these do not need to be translated. Also there are ICT terms for which there are no corresponding words in Fiji Hindi, for example "Atom feed", "RSS feed", byte log in, password etc. - as expected the English words for these are used without any translation.
