Notes/Comments/Questions

edit
    • I don't know ancient egyptian, but we have Latin, so I don't see why we can't have this, and this would be a very cool wiki.
    • Writing about Nuclear energy in Egyptian hyroglyphs .... would it be possible? Waerth 09:01, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • Yes it will, albeit with some artifices. Take a look at the Old English Wikipedia and see how they solved a similar problem there: with a lot of neologisms. Be creative and it will be all right! Caesarion 10:17, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
      • But there is another problem: I found no evidence of Unicode supporting hieroglyphs and I can hardly imagine it does, since they are so often placed above and underneath one another. And before we think of an Old Egyptian Wikipedia in hieroglyphs, we'd better consider one in Ancient Greek or in Coptic... Caesarion 10:42, 31 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]
        • There's no need to rely on unicode, because we have WikiHiero for rendering such things - as demonstrated above! - IMSoP 01:03, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)
          • Wow, that's really cool! Now let's try to find some supporters then! Caesarion 14:16, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)
          • Umm, but then how do I find anything once I'm there? Let's say I want to see the article about "Ramses II." I may well know how to spell his name in hieroglyphs, but how do I enter that in the address bar? Or add it to interwiki? This is a very serious consideration. I would have to
    • Just a technical remark to the anonymus proposer: I think you should change the request to "Ancient Egyptian" or "Egyptian" (written in hieroglyphs, of course), for you don't request scripts here but languages. Since you don't know the language yourself, you should try to find some people willing and able to contribute. Arbeo 13:29, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)
      • Why not have it in Latin to begin with, and if all goes well, we can experiment with hieroglyphs, which might not be supported by the computer and will usually appear as bricks on the screen. (Rumour has it a few Wikipedia vandals are using a nonprinting character at the start of their user name, which appears in HTML markup as %8F and appears in the article titles as a brick.) • Well, just because the transcription conventions differ per country and per tradition, sometimes beyond mutual intteligibility. Caesarion 11:56, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • Hey, the anonymous poster was me. Please add your name under "supporters". Revolución 03:40, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
  • I know this might not be the right place to ask this, but does anyone know of any websites to learn Ancient Egyptian? Because I would definitely want to get involved with this project but I don't know a word of Ancient Egyptian. Thanks in advance. Revolución 03:46, 19 Jun 2005 (UTC)
    • Just a little thing, it is not necessarily impossible to write modern encyclopaedias in ancient languages, but this is an extreme case. I think that with this language it is more than anywhere else desirable that you create a Test Wikipedia asap, just to prove you can do it. Caesarion 17:18, 22 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: A wiki in hieroglyphics is too much. However, I'd support wikisource and wikiquote in a recognised and useful transliteration or transcription scheme. --Nema Fakei 16:16, 26 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Would this be en:Archaic Egyptian, en:Old Egyptian, en:Middle Egyptian or en:Late Egyptian? --Kajk 14:19, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Conditional Support

edit
  • Conditional Support: I would welcome this as a wikipedia. However, I don't know if there are really enough to carry this forwards. If you can get 12 people here who would genuinely help, change my vote to support. -en:User:Dbmag9/la:Usor:Dbmag9
  • Conditional Support: I would support this if it is in either hieroglyphs (I can see people are argueing about that above), Greek Alphabet (Ancient Egyptian was diciphered by using Greek, iirc) or Arabic Alphabet because the people of modern Egypt are Arabs, but if it is in Latin Alphabet I will vehemetly oppose. (Needs to log in to vote.--Californiacondor 00:20, 16 November 2006 (UTC))[reply]
  • conditional support' Only if this is in Coptic Alphabet. Hieroglyphs aren't availabel, unfortunatley..--Fox Mccloud 16:50, 28 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • conditional support See Steinbach's comments above. If a test wiki can be created to prove that it can be done, and people can agree on orthography etc., support. LeighvsOptimvsMaximvs
