This proposal has been rejected. This decision was taken by the language committee in accordance with the Language proposal policy based on the discussion on this page. A committee member provided the following comment: While the study of Proto-Indo-European is a noble task, it is not fitting for a Wikipedia project. Rejected per the policy, specifically point 4 under "Requisites for eligibility". Jon Harald Søby (talk) 09:15, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | ine (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Proto-Indo-European | Language name in English |
Language name | Pr̥mo·Sendʰro·U̯erokᵘ̯esi̯om | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q37178 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | no indication | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | ine.wikipedia.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | U̯ik̑īpē̆di̯ā | "Wikipedia" in your language |
Project namespace | U̯ik̑īpē̆di̯ā | usually the same as the project name |
Project talk namespace | U̯ik̑īpē̆di̯ā tolkᵘ̯om | "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | File:Wikipedia-logo-v2-ine.png | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). |
Default project timezone | EET | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | (optional) | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". |
Additional settings | (optional) | Anything else that should be set |
Proposal
editProto-Indo-European (PIE) is the linguistic reconstruction of the common ancestor of the Indo-European laguages. PIE was the first proposed proto-language to be widely accepted by linguists. There are several competing hypotheses about when and where PIE was spoken. The Kurgan hypothesis is "the single most popular" model, wherein the bearers of the Kurgan culture of the Pontic-Caspian Steppe are the hypothesized speakers of the reconstructed Proto-Indo-European language. It was spoken by Proto-Indo-Europeans. It will be very useful for linguists and students to teach or learn and there is many people willing to help, also, it will be a place for Indo-Europeanists to compare Indo-European languages --Guillermo2149 (talk) 14:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
Discussion
edit- Support It will be useful for teachers and students --Guillermo2149 (talk) 15:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
- It will be also useful for researchers to compare Indo-European languages --Guillermo2149 (talk) 15:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
- It will be way easier for researchers to get content in Proto-Indo-European online --Guillermo2149 (talk) 15:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
- Researchers will "exercise their skills" and at the same time contribute --Guillermo2149 (talk) 15:20, 25 February 2016 (UTC)
- It could give Indo-European language speakers a way of looking at and studying their common ancestor online --Guillermo2149 (talk) 14:27, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

- Strongly Oppose. Firstly, PIE has not yet been reconstructed to any respectable extent, and that's why it isn't used widely even among linguists. Secondly, even if we assume that PIE has already been reconstructed and understood well enough, there still will be place for speculations due to possibility of discovering previously unknown extinct IE languages which can drastically change our understanding of PIE. 109.237.123.204 19:52, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
Notes/Comments/Questions
edit- There is an Incubator test --Guillermo2149 (talk) 18:26, 3 March 2016 (UTC)
- a few things :
- Did anything change in the "State of the Art" of this language since the previously refused proposal ?
- People voting without argumentation... in the #Discussion section no less, highlight the fact they won't even bother reading the page's instructions. It doesn't bode well for the proposal.
- I propose that if Indo-European is to have a Wikipedia, it needs to be Late-Indo-European. The one used by Academia Prisca [1] of Fernando López-Menchero. To which, "A Grammar of Modern Indo-European" is a complete reference guide to a living Indo-European language. Having a Wikipedia in this form of the language would help people understand Indo-European culture. Late-Indo-European is readable and represents a langauge that would be both written and spoken, whereas larnygeal PIE is not really a langauge you would write down. For example, Wiḱípḗdyā Léudherom Énqeqlopautyom is readable. Suḱléwos of the Euxine Steppe (talk) 02:03, 3 October 2017 (UTC)
