Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Southern Altai
submitted | verification | final decision |
|
This proposal has been approved. The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project. A committee member provided the following comment: |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | alt (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Altai | Language name in English |
Language name | алтай тил | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q1991779 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | LTR | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Site URL | alt.wikipedia.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | Википедия | "Wikipedia" in your language |
Project namespace | Википедия | usually the same as the project name |
Project talk namespace | Википедияти шӱӱжери | "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). | |
Default project timezone | Asia/Barnaul | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above. |

- Strongly support Since the beginning of 2020, a group of users led by Tolush have done a lot of useful things in the development of this edition. Since June, the number of active editors (more than 100 edits per month) has not dropped below five, in recent months has reached seven or even eight people. Thanks to Batyr Komdoshev, in mid-October of 2020, 100% of the most used messages have been translated into Altai language. And he continues his work. Observing (and humbly helping) the development of the project, I can say that it is necessary to create a new Altai Wikipedia as soon as possible because at the moment the participants if the Altai WP pilot project faced with strong limitations of the Incubator in the technical part. I believe that Altai Wikipedia will be a successful wiki project in small languages.--Soul Train (talk) 15:08, 12 December 2020 (UTC)
- Strongly support - active improvement in the course of last half a year.--Frhdkazan (talk) 12:53, 13 December 2020 (UTC)
- ⊕ Support, a real language with thousands of real speakers and a dedicated territory, certainly needs to be supported in Wikimedia way as Wikimedia usually support such languages. --Ssr (talk) 12:54, 13 December 2020 (UTC)

Settings
editHi there! (Ping User:Толуш, User:Bakpay, User:Soul Train, User:Konstantyn Oinotkynov). As this project will probably be approved soon, please check whether the settings for the new wiki - given in the table at the top of the page - are correct. --MF-W 09:31, 6 January 2021 (UTC)
- Thank you! I'll connect with Tolush today and ask her to check these messages again. — Soul Train (talk) 23:12, 7 January 2021 (UTC)
- Status on Fabricator now is Stalled. Once again, please remove the word “South” from the name of the language.
“Here is the Constitution of the Republic of Altai: http://docs.cntd.ru/document/304200009 «Государственными языками в Республике Алтай являются алтайский и русский языки» [The state languages in the Altai Republic are Altai and Russian] (Article 13)”
Someone once in ISO added the word “South” to counterbalance of “North,” and this error has been spreading ever since. It is not correct. If this is not possible, leave this. The main thing now is to open the section. The second problem is critical. I changed the time zone for Barnaul (centre of the Altai Krai; in the past, the Altai Republic was part of this region, and it is the closest city from the list of valid timezones), please confirm it and send the new data to the Fabricator. Since 2014, Omsk is in a different time zone (UTC +06:00), Altai stayed in UTC +07:00.--Soul Train (talk) 12:47, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- That's ok I guess (en:Altai Republic should probably be updated?). The rest of the settings is ok? --MF-W 16:26, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, of course. What about site logo?--Soul Train (talk) 21:21, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- If there's a translated logo, we should use that. But if none exists yet, for the sake of making progress in the wiki creation, I'd suggest it's better to proceed with the standard logo and make a request to change it when one is available, after the wiki creation (not while the Phabricator task is open, as it will lead to developers once again wondering if they should stall the request). --MF-W 22:26, 20 January 2021 (UTC)
- OK!--Soul Train (talk) 17:46, 21 January 2021 (UTC)
