Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Standard Malay (Jawi)

submitted verification final decision
Discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Votes will be ignored when judging the proposal. Please provide arguments or reasons and be prepared to defend them (see the Language proposal policy).

The language committee needs to verify the language is eligible to be approved.

  • Check that the project does not already exist (see list).
  • Obtain an ISO 639 code
  • Ensure the requested language is sufficiently unique that it could not exist on a more general wiki.
  • Ensure that there are a sufficient number of native editors of that language to merit an edition in that language.
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code zsm (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Standard Malay Language name in English
Language name ملايو ڤياواي Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q15065 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality rtl Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name ويكيڤيديا "Wikipedia" in your language
Project namespace ويكيڤيديا usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace واروڠ كوڤي "Wikipedia talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo [[:
لمبڠ ويكيڤيديا اونتوق ملايو ڤياواي
]]
This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Kuala_Lumpur "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Proposal

edit

This is a request to create a new Wikipedia edition in Standard Malay (zsm), distinct from the existing Malay Wikipedia (mswiki). While mswiki includes informal and colloquial language forms, this edition will strictly use formal, standardized Malay as defined by institutions like Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP). --Shoujo Hirohito (talk)

To be clear, you request that this wiki be written only in Jawi script? --MF-W 13:34, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, because it's not with romanized script like mswiki. This will be only in Jawi script. 裕仁少女 (talk) 17:41, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Can't phab:T261507 help you from building it without creating of a new "zsmwiki"? See also Wikipedias in multiple writing systems#Malay. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 22:21, 17 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

I asked him to help me build it. He still not replied yet 裕仁少女 (talk) 08:12, 18 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How about we just create a new one? Since the user is offline for a long time. 裕仁少女 (talk) 05:52, 20 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Liuxinyu970226, although I am leaning towards disagreeing with the creation of a Jawi-script Malay Wikipedia, I think I understand how @裕仁少女 feel regarding this matter.
Although there is a plan to implement the language converter for Malay language as shown by phab:T261507, no progress has been made for around 5-6 years since it has been proposed. Our Malay language community is eager to participate in the development, but almost all of us lack the technical skills to contribute to the implementation of Malay-language script converter.
At the same time, the page Wikipedias in multiple writing systems provides little to zero information on how those without technical skills can contribute to speed up the development of Malay language script converter.
This has lead to frustration which ultimately gave rise to the idea of "Instead of waiting for someone to initiate the development of Malay language script converter for who knows how many decades of waiting, why don't we just create a separate wiki for the Arabic Malay script (zsmwiki/ms-arabwiki), even though it is the same language as Latin Malay script (mswiki)?" Hakimi97 (talk) 11:17, 26 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you. We should create a separate wiki for the Arabic Malay script because Jawi script is an important part of Malay history and culture. By creating a dedicated wiki, we are helping to preserve, document, and preserve this heritage for future generations. Through this wiki, people can learn to write, read, and understand Jawi more easily, while also helping to revive its use in daily life. Wiki Jawi can be an authentic reference for students, researchers, writers, and the general public who are interested in Jawi, Malay history, and classical literature. 裕仁少女 (talk) 09:04, 27 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]
It seems unnecessary to create another Wikipedia for an existing language in Wikipedia just to accommodate a different writing system. Currently, there is already a script converter on Malay Wikipedia. While it is still somewhat in development, the core system is already usable and can potentially be implemented within the next few months. Only updates to Wikidata Lexemes is needed to fix any unconverted words or terms. At this point, the biggest hurdle for the Jawi script is that there are still characters not implemented in Unicode, notably the three-quarter Hamzah, which will still not be solved with a new Wikipedia in the script. Aside from that, the current Malay Wikipedia already recognizes the standard version of Malay for several countries to regulate spelling and grammar. Standardized Malay already has issues with spelling in Jawi due to the main writing system being the Latin script, so I don't see how a "Standard Malay (zsm)" version strictly following Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka (DBP) would be able to produce words in Jawi script if they don't yet exist in publications by DBP. Not every word has been "standardized" in the Jawi script, so that would mean words will be spelled in a "non-standardized" manner until the words are actually confirmed by DBP, making the whole premise of having this Wikipedia redundant.
