Requests for new languages/Wikiquote Igbo
submitted | verification | final decision |

This proposal has been approved. The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project. A committee member provided the following comment: |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What | Value | Example / Explanation |
---|
Proposal | ||
---|---|---|
Language code | ig (SIL, Glottolog) | A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ... |
Language name | Igbo | Language name in English |
Language name | Asụsụ Igbo | Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ... |
Language Wikidata item | Q33578 - item has currently the following values:
|
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed. |
Directionality | LTR | Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)? |
Links | Igbo Wikimedians User Group | Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents. |
Site URL | ig.wikiquote.org | langcode.wikiproject.org |
Settings | ||
---|---|---|
Project name | Wikikwotu | "Wikiquote" in your language |
Project namespace | Wikikwotu | usually the same as the project name |
Project talk namespace | Ńkàtá_Wikikwotu | "Wikiquote talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace) |
Enable uploads | no | Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons. If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons. |
Optional settings | ||
Project logo | File:Wikiquote-logo-ig.svg | This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation). |
Default project timezone | Africa/Lagos | "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones) |
Additional namespaces | For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk". | |
Additional settings | Anything else that should be set | |
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above. |
Proposal
editAs Chinua Achebe said, "proverbs are the palm-oil with which words are eaten [in the Igbo language]". Quotes and proverbs are a pillar of the Igbo language and any good speaker is expected to know proverbs or to recite quotes, this is why an Igbo version of wikiquote would not only be excellent but ideal. Wikiquote was made for this language, and this is why I am in favour of the creation of an Igbo wikiquote (Wikinsereokwu). There may not seem to be a strong community backing the creation of this project, and this is because most Igbo speakers don't even know something like this can exist, or will exist. Please allow wikiquote, or Wikinsereokwu, to exist in the language it was created for.
Discussion
edit- Support Thank you. Ukabia 11:55, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
- Support I am ready willing and able to contribute to this project. I worked with a team to start an Igbo language class in Washington, DC. We published a 250 page textbook (largely written by me) that teaches Igbo language to English speakers. I can devote 14 hours per week to this project. neurogirl47 9:58PM, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
- Support I think that igbo languaga should be in this site. I'm a proud igbo person, and I think that thee should be a way to share this unique language all over the world.
Imena maka nti igerem (Thank you for listening). Glots
- Support I introduced the Igbo Wikimedians User Group community to the Wikiquote last year's October and it has since been active with the help of the volunteer community and also funding from the simple Annual Grant. I've been devoting my time to create Redlists and getting the community involved both old and new editors.Tochiprecious (talk) 16:57, 17 June 2022 (UTC)

- @Daberechi16, Timzy D'Great, Lebron jay, Queenbella001, Senator Choko, Dera xoxo, Olugold, Sayvhior, Love4sure, and Onyeike Izuchi:@Palow s coba11: Do anyone know how to translate the "Wikiquote" in Igbo? --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:38, 14 July 2022 (UTC)
- @MF-Warburg which page are you referring to? @Liuxinyu970226 Yes, most of us listed above can translate to Igbo Olugold (talk) 02:21, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Well, what I mean is the translated name of project name Wikiquote in Igbo. Anyway, should there have an Igbo language logo of Wikiquote? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 02:23, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Alright Liuxinyu970226. This is fine Wikikwotu or Wikiokwu, I also see the initial proposal has Wikinsereokwu. I'll find out from community members to see if they all agree to select a translation. I'll notify you here once there's a general agreement and a preferred selection is made. Then the Igbo Language Center can it possibly be linked to the Igbo Wikimedians User Group Meta page? Olugold (talk) 02:39, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi @Liuxinyu970226:! We have agreed to use Wikikwotu. Kindly take note. Thank you! Olugold (talk) 13:20, 15 July 2022 (UTC)
- User:Olugold: should the corresponding talk namespace be translated as "Okwu Wikikwotu"? --MF-W 12:57, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- "Wikikwotu" is okay and I also agree to a logo for Wikikwotu in Igbo Wikipedia interface. Thank you. --@MF-Warburg --User: Onyeike Izuchi
- @MF-Warburg Ńkàtá would be better. Ńkàtá means discussion in Igbo. Thank you Olugold (talk) 13:25, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- I was basing this on the namespace names on ig.wikipedia as seen e.g. on ig:Special:Allpages. It would make for some more consistency. --MF-W 13:33, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- Nice point @MF-Warburg. I checked the talk on ig.wikipedia.org for consistency too but the translation is not so accurate. Though it's improving by the day. I also found out from other communty members, Ńkàtá would be the best option for talk and also a general term. Ákíkó on the other hand, as seen on the Igbo Wikipedia might be a dialect for some Igbo people which is generally known as Ákụ́kọ́. Ákụ́kọ́ is an ambiguous word in Igbo language that can mean any of the following: discussion, news, and story (Ákụ́kọ́ ifo) but ńkàtá means discussion. While translating, we always advice translators to use the "general Igbo language" that is familiar to all Igbos and for a better understanding. It would be nice if it is used on ig.wikipedia.org too.The new Vector 2022 interface has nkàta (It is visible if one clicks on the drop down arrow beside the profile icon). Also note that Nkata is a heteronym in Igbo language, the high-low tone marks are used to differentiate the pronunciations. E g Ńkàtá is discussion,Ǹkàtà is basket. Thank you so much and sorry for all inconveniences. Olugold (talk) 16:45, 16 July 2022 (UTC)
- Interesting, maybe a Phabricator task should be submitted to modify all *_talk: namespaces in Igbo to Ńkàtá_*: Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 11:55, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- Yes, I agree @Liuxinyu970226 and would be nice too!🙂 In the same way,
- 'Preference' which is currently 'Ndoziri' on ig.wikipedia.org can be adjusted to Ńdózí. Ńdózí as a noun means fix, repair, set, improve, etc. For a better understanding and breakdown, To fix (idozi), fixing (na-edozi), fix it (dozie ya), fixed (edoziri, idoziri). Ndoziri which doesn't fit-in looked similar to edoziri/idoziri.
- 'Edit source' which is currently 'Mèzi mkpụrụ' can also be adjusted to Ḿmézí mkpụrụ Thank you so much. Olugold (talk) 13:48, 17 July 2022 (UTC)
- I think all of them can and should be resolved by Phabricator task, submit it? Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 23:17, 18 July 2022 (UTC)
