Requests for new languages/Wikivoyage Korean

submitted verification final decision

This language has been verified as eligible.
The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page.

Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval.

If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval.

A committee member provided the following comment:

This language is eligible without doubt. It must however fulfill the normal activity criteria, as ko.wikivoyage was found to have only a few useful pages (these latter can be imported to the Incubator test-wiki, or later to an own subdomain, per usual import procedures there). --MF-W 07:35, 17 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code ko (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Korean Language name in English
Language name 한국어 Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q9176 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name 위키여행 "Wikivoyage" in your language
Project namespace 위키여행 usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace 위키여행토론 "Wikivoyage talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:Wikivoyage-Logo-v3-ko.svg This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Seoul "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings enable Josa extension, like on other Korean wikis Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

FYI: Korean language have their own wikitravel domain - I think this should treated as Requests_for_new_languages#Wikivoyage. --관인생략 (talk) 15:05, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Korean wikitravel has almost no meaningful contents - most of them are spam or gibberish. --by ReviDiscussSUL Info at 10:03, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Also,Wikitravel's data was not imported to incubator. --by ReviDiscussSUL Info at 12:41, 12 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
They are not all meaningless - considering that this request is also comes with importing Wikitravel's data to Wikivoyage, we don't have to prepare contents to be imported. --관인생략 (talk) 22:41, 13 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Do you have Wikitravel's content with XML files? For importing,as you know,Exporting is basic for import. If not,we cannot import it. And wikitravel does not allow exporting.
  2. And,Incubator test wiki has only >50 articles. We need more content and more contributors. Not enough for now. --by ReviDiscussSUL Info at 09:07, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In ko-wikivoyage, there is not enough templates. We should import templates first.--콩가루 (talk) 09:12, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear MF-Warburg, is this project will be categorized in this category? --관인생략 (talk) 11:18, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, because, as I said, it will not be based on ko.wikitravel articles necessarily. --MF-W 12:22, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
How come? Does that mean you guys don't have any data from wikitravel or there's no way to import it? --관인생략 (talk) 00:59, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
See above "[...] as ko.wikivoyage was found to have only a few useful pages [...]" and incubator:Incubator:Wikivoyage_import#.22No_meaningful_edits_recently.22. --MF-W 07:31, 20 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also curious that what is the criteria of "few useful pages". --관인생략 (talk) 04:18, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can see what is in Wikitravel at Special:Allpages there. --MF-W 19:48, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's not just a few, there's at least 200 main documents we can import. Should I just copy and paste to import those articles or are there any official way to import it? --관인생략 (talk) 07:12, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

*   Strong support --Assoc (talk) 04:57, 22 January 2018 (UTC) revoking LTA vote. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:05, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nobody is saying Korean is an obscure language by any measure. But even a well-spoken language might simply see disinterest among the wiki community fluent in that language in maintaining certain projects. SecretName101 (talk) 22:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Support I think this project can have evidences to be approved now. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 04:06, 30 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
