Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Madurese

submitted verification final decision

This proposal has been approved.
The Board of Trustees and language committee have deemed that there is sufficient grounds and community to create the new language project.

A committee member provided the following comment:

No eligibility concerns. --MF-W 10:22, 4 September 2024 (UTC) - Approved on 2024-09-17, phabricator:T374968. --MF-W 14:27, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
  • The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
  • The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:
What Value Example / Explanation
Proposal
Language code mad (SILGlottolog) A valid ISO 639-1 or 639-3 language code, like "fr", "de", "nso", ...
Language name Madurese Language name in English
Language name Bhâsa Madhurâ Language name in your language. This will appear in the language list on Special:Preferences, in the interwiki sidebar on other wikis, ...
Language Wikidata item Q36213 - item has currently the following values:
Item about the language at Wikidata. It would normally include the Wikimedia language code, name of the language, etc. Please complete at Wikidata if needed.
Directionality LTR Is the language written from left to right (LTR) or from right to left (RTL)?
Links Links to previous requests, or references to external websites or documents.

Settings
Project name Wikikamus "Wiktionary" in your language
Project namespace Wikikamus usually the same as the project name
Project talk namespace Parembhâghân_Wikikamus "Wiktionary talk" (the discussion namespace of the project namespace)
Enable uploads no Default is "no". Preferably, files should be uploaded to Commons.
If you want, you can enable local file uploading, either by any user ("yes") or by administrators only ("admin").
Notes: (1) This setting can be changed afterwards. The setting can only be "yes" or "admin" at approval if the test creates an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP) first. (2) Files on Commons can be used on all Wikis. (3) Uploading fair-use images is not allowed on Commons (more info). (4) Localisation to your language may be insufficient on Commons.
Optional settings
Project logo File:... This needs to be an SVG image (instructions for logo creation).
Default project timezone Asia/Jakarta "Continent/City", e.g. "Europe/Brussels" or "America/Mexico City" (see list of valid timezones)
Additional namespaces For example, a Wikisource would need "Page", "Page talk", "Index", "Index talk", "Author", "Author talk".
Additional settings Anything else that should be set
Once settings are finalized, a committee member will submit a Phabricator task requesting creation of the wiki. (This will include everything automatically, except the additional namespaces/settings.) After the task is created, it should be linked to in a comment under "final decision" above.

Madurese is a language in the Austronesian Malayo-Polynesian language family. It is spoken by approximately 15 million people in Indonesia, mainly on Madura Island, with considerable speakers in East Java Island[1].

H. N. Kiliaan, a Dutch colonial government civil servant in 1898, first attempted to compile a Dutch-Madurese lexicon[2]. He then published the first Madurese-Dutch Dictionary (in two volumes) in 1904 and 1905 [3][4]. In the steps of Kiliaan's works, Stokmans & Marinissen and Penninga & Hendriks compiled a shorter version of Dutch-Madurese dictionaries in the following years, the first being in 1922 and the latter in 1936[5][6]. In the Indonesia's post-independence period, Safioedin (1977) published a Madurese-Indonesian Dictionary with adaptations to Indonesian spelling[7]. Henceforth, the development of the Madurese lexicographical activity stagnated until, in 2008, Pawitra compiled the Complete Madurese-Indonesian Dictionary, derived from the works of Kiliaan[8]. Pawitra's dictionary is widely used and recognized as the standard lexicon for Madurese-Indonesian translation since its adaptations of the Madurese orthography system.

Unfortunately, Pawitra's dictionary is no longer in reprint. For us, Madurese native speakers and learners, this could lead to the loss of crucial lexicographical documentation about the Madurese language, containing words and phrases that are rarely used or still frequently used in colloquial scenes. Therefore, the Wikimedia Madurese Contributors propose adding entries from this dictionary to be available in the Madurese Language Wiktionary. Hence, the Madurese Lexicon is freely accessible to everyone.

Sincerely, Boesenbergia (talk) 07:00, 22 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
