Requests for new languages/Wiktionary Santali

|
This language has been verified as eligible. The language is eligible for a project, which means that the subdomain can be created once there is an active community and a localized interface, as described in the language proposal policy. You can discuss the creation of this language project on this page. Once the criteria are met, the language committee can proceed with the approval. If you think the criteria are met, but the project is still waiting for approval, feel free to notify the committee and ask them to consider its approval. |
- The community needs to develop an active test project; it must remain active until approval (automated statistics, recent changes). It is generally considered active if the analysis lists at least three active, not-grayed-out editors listed in the sections for the previous few months.
- The community needs to complete required MediaWiki interface translations in that language (about localization, translatewiki, check completion).
- The community needs to discuss and complete the settings table below:

Proposal
editSantali is one of the 22 official languages of India and is among the most widely spoken Austroasiatic languages, with approximately 7.2 million speakers.[1][2] As a South Asian Austroasiatic language, Santali is quite distinct from both other Austroasiatic languages and Indian languages. This uniqueness can make it useful for Santali speakers to utilize existing Wiktionary resources.
Santali boasts a rich literary tradition, both written and oral. The Government of India has officially recognized the Sahitya Akademi for its role in nurturing and promoting Santali literature.[3] While the Santali culture is vibrant and diverse, much of its heritage has been preserved through oral traditions, resulting in limited documentation in the Santali language itself.
Although considerable research and documentation have been undertaken regarding the traditions, culture, folklore, and literature of the Santal community, most of this work has been conducted in other Indian languages. The survival and growth of any language significantly depend on the availability of knowledge and texts in that language.
Moreover, the Santali Wikipedia, which launched six years ago,[4] is an active project that could greatly benefit from a resource like Wiktionary. Such a platform would allow for the consolidation of vocabulary that is currently scattered across various offline books and retained in people's memories. Editors would then have an easier time searching for words needed to write and translate articles. Currently, Our team has strengthened to make continuous contributions. The Santali Wiktionary now contains over 1,500 entries.[5] Therefore, the creation of a Santali Wiktionary is essential. Thank you. ᱤᱧ ᱢᱟᱛᱟᱞ (talk) 17:13, 31 October 2024 (UTC)

- Strong support I'm excited to share my thoughts on the Santali Wiktionary project. After Wikipedia's launch, we've been working to get Wiktionary off the ground. This year's regional conference really helped spread the word, thanks in large part to Bodi's efforts. Now, we're seeing lots of contributions and I'm hopeful we'll soon have our own domain, also thanks to Таёжный лес for supporting us🙏🙏.Rocky 734 (talk) 13:18, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- Support. In my patrolling duties I often spot edits on the Santali Wiktionary test project on Incubator, and I think it is the time it should be branched off from Incubator to its own domain. Seeing the growing Santali community in the Wikimedia project I think there's a real need for a Wiktionary aside from the existing Wikipedia. ToadetteEdit (talk) 14:12, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for all your effort on the Santali Wiktionary! I think it’s time for its own domain—it’d be a fantastic resource. Let’s keep up the great work! 😊ᱤᱧ ᱢᱟᱛᱟᱞ (talk) 17:37, 10 November 2024 (UTC)

- Strong support We, the community members are working collaboratively to see it live. I think, it's the best time to live. We're committed to contribute rigorously after live it. ᱯᱨᱚᱯᱷᱮᱥᱥᱚᱨ 💬 19:03, 10 November 2024 (UTC)
- Strong support This project should move out of the incubator, as it has great potential to contribute to preserving linguistic heritage, empowering underrepresented communities, and promoting cultural and educational inclusivity.--Jnanaranjan sahu (talk) 06:15, 14 November 2024 (UTC)
