Research:Expanding Wikipedia articles across languages/Projects
This page gathers the already existing initiatives that do article expansion recommendations. We understand that there is no guarantee that this list be an exhaustive list given the distributed nature of the work done on Wikipedia/Wikimedia projects.
Ma Commune
editMa Commune is a French Wikipedia project that helps editors identify ways to contribute to an already existing article on French Wikipedia. At the time of writing this section, here are the things we (roughly) know about the project:
- It is currently focused on towns in France. The idea is simple: every person would know something about the town they live in and that can create an easy entry way to contribute to Wikipedia, through their local knowledge.
- For each town, there is a corresponding Wikipedia article on French Wikipedia. The user of Ma Commune will be able to find the town most relevant to their case and see what sections are missing from the article on their town. They also see some guidelines on how to write the article about a town beyond adding the section.
- The sections and guidelines are hard-coded based on the work of WikiProject Communes de France. The specific WikiProject has set clear guidelines for how to expand articles about towns in France.
- The edit happens on Wikipedia. The users use Ma Commune's interface as a way to discover where and how to contribute.
- The website is currently external to Wikipedia. One of the reasons is that from the technical standpoint, it is easier to fire up a user-centric website outside of the project and use that as an entry point to Wikipedia.
- Ma Commune is interested to expand the scope of their recommendations the tool offers beyond towns in French Wikipedia. The team is interested to explore with other geotagged/geotaggable articles, for example, those corresponding to the monuments (related to Wiki Loves Monuments) or natural items (related to Wiki Loves Earth). The team is interested to start the development in early 2018.
