Research talk:Teahouse/Hosting/Lounge use

Latest comment: 12 years ago by Dalahäst in topic Host lounge suggestions

Please share your thoughts and feelings about the host lounge pages. Think about the following:

  • What page(s), if any, do you use frequently?
  • Why do you use them, and why don't you use others?
  • What part of this page is valuable to you and can you see it being used in the future?

To make it easier to read, use this syntax:

Your name here
  • Do you use this page?
  • If so, why? If not, why not?
  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

Remember the goal of this and let's try to create content that will be used and valuable to hosts now and in the future. Please contribute your thoughts in the sections below, the more the merrier:

No

I already have a good handle on what I am doing

Nothing really. Good for new hosts.

Not anymore.

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

Useful before / right after signing on, to learn what hosting is about. Thereafter, not so much.

A link for potential hosts to sign up would be good on this page, I think.

  • Do you use this page?

Not recently, though according to my browser history, I have been there before.

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

I believe I used it during the pilot phase, to make sure I was doing things right, but even then only once.

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

I would prefer "expectations" to "responsibilities". Responsibility implies an obligation, and that the duty should be performed to a satifactory level. It doesn't quite fit with a volunteer group taken from a set of volunteers. Also, I would suggest it was merged with a few other pages to make a "how to be a host" guide.

Read it once. "Invite at least 20 new good-faith editors..." was a killer; I probably manage a dozen or more but at least 20...

  • Do you use this page?

Used to

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

Inviting and tracking was somewhat tedious

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

Bots, bots, and more bots. You don't need a human to drop an invite template on a users page. Everything from leaving invites to tracking the results of invites can be done and kept track of by bots. If you are concerned about not having the signature personalized on the invitation, get a list of hosts whose name the bot can sign. You can even automate emails if you want to do that.

Dalahäst
  • Do you use this page?

Not regularly. Have done so in the past.

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

Good place to get started inviting people. The sample email contains some useful material to consider when writing one's own email (which really is a good idea, since even new editors are often aware that we like to slap templates on talk pages).

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

Ideally, we could make some more useful templates (currently, we only seem to use the welcoming ones) and put them up on this page. Different designs, more choices of wording, etc. would further detract from the idea that all we do is slap templates on pages. Moreover, I would like to point out that I strongly disagree with the above recommendation of "bots, bots, and more bots". Bots would be, IMHO, counterproductive for the Teahouse, as they make things less personal, not more. Bots should, for the purposes of the Teahouse, be restricted to tasks that help keep it operating smoothly (e.g. archiving the questions, preparing lists of new users that may need an invite), and should ideally never be seen by the Teahouse's "customers". The idea of having a bot sign other editors' names also seems rather dishonest, in a way.

During the pilot

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

I needed a link to the google spreadsheet. It was fairly tedious, and having the flow diagram was helpful.

I'm with Jayron. This should be done by a bot, though the community has been against automatic welcoming in the past.

Hajatvrc
  • Do you use this page?

I refer to Step 1 a lot.

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

Always tells me where to go after I've gone through the DBR.

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

Step 2 should not include the templates as they belong with the rest of the templates.
Step 3 is needed but I always use my own emails. I suppose the example was useful in my first week.
I think the bot should invite the editors it is currently inviting, but that hosts should look in the other places!

Nthep
  • Do you use this page?

Used to, I've only ever really invited from new user contributions

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

Most of the other methods I found too time consuming to work with. Going from contribs I've always worked slightly different and didn't bother with the 10 edit guideline. I've invited on just one or two if they look to me like genuine attempts to improve content. I don't bother with email much either

Useful when starting out. Those of us who are accustomed to dealing with new editors should find most of this to be second-nature. If not, it's a good reminder to them of how they should act, I suppose.

This may sound arrogant, but interacting with users is what I do. I do it well, and I wouldn't have been convinced that the tips would actually be an improvement on my style.

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

Having looked at it, I'm not happy with a couple of the suggestions. Expecting editors to email the new users who leave is above and beyond the call of duty in my opinion. It's exactly why I dropped out of WikiGuides, it's demoralising for the editor who's putting that much effort in on lost causes (even if you're doubling the retention rate, you're sending out hundreds emails which go unanswered)
The teahouse talkback should definitely be done by a bot. I'm not a fan of talkback messages, I know the benefits for new users, but when they're asking multiple questions, or getting multiple answers, I don't think it's needed.

Well, I do like the idea for some people, but it's not for me. I'm not keen on canned responses, I'll come up with a metaphor or an explanation on the spot, it's half the fun and important to tailor the comment to the user's question. For example, if a user comes in shouting that their article has been deleted, when it's actually only been tagged, they will need a much more detailed explanation about what deletion on wikipedia means, than someone who had just !voted at an AfD.

DocTree
  • Do you use this page?

No.

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

A couple of reasons.

  1. Per WormTT and others, I want my answers to be specific to the particular new user and what s/he asked, not a boiler plate answer.
  2. As both the newest (in time on Wikipedia and number of edits) and oldest (in chronological age) host, the Teahouse is a way for me to learn the intricacies of Wikipedia policy and procedures. I often see a newcomer ask a question that I didn't know enough to even ask. Researching the correct answer and putting the answer in plain English is educational for me.

I installed the user script that inserts the invite, AFC invite, and talkback templates with one click, so it's less useful now. I did also grab the two welcome templates that plug the Teahouse for my Twinkle installation. Handy, one way or another.

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

As above (under invite guide), a large variety of templates, perhaps in different styles, would be good for spicing things up a bit. This also detracts from the image that many new users have of experienced Wikipedians simply slapping templates onto their talk pages, which might as well be done by a bot (and this is the case on some Wikipedias, if memory serves). I'd be more than willing to help out with the templates, should we go ahead with that.

A bit more variety. I saw variations of the invite template on new user's talk pages that aren't included on this page. I personally use a whisperback for subsequent discussion added to a question where the talkback template is already on a new user's talk page to reduce clutter.

Move to the top of most pages (where it is at the Q&A) as opposed to the bottom.

I looked at it once to see how many inactive hosts we have. Doesn't really serve any other purpose.

No compelling reason.

  • Suggestions?

Try to spice it up the same way as the main page. Add some new element. I'm thinking of some myself, and I'll get back to you.

Nope

  • If so, why? If not, why not?

Don't see it as that helpful

  • Suggestions on how to improve this page?

Have something on there as to why the host stopped. Depending on the reason, they could be asked to restart :) Without something like that, it's pointless (everything's in the history), get rid of it.

Host lounge suggestions

edit

What type of pages, things, content, etc, would you like to see in the host lounge?

  • Your idea here
    • It's not particularly useful as it is, except as a quick-start guide for new hosts. Could be expanded to include content more useful to all hosts, e.g. examples of well-written answers and the like. Dalahäst (talk) 03:46, 8 August 2012 (UTC) N.B. I didn't realize I hadn't signed this earlier, so the timestamp there is actually wrong. Better late than never, hm?Reply
    • Things should be condensed a bit. If it can be handled with a link to another Wikipedia page, do that. Some redundant or pages with similar purposes could be combined. --Jayron32 (talk) 23:38, 7 August 2012 (UTC)Reply
    • "One page" transclusion option like AfD. More community-based spaces such as sharing custom welcome messages; posting one's favorite answers (or parts of answers) by other hosts giving praise there in supplement to (or as opposed to) giving barnstars that just encourage hat collecting. Community is the only way to universally ensure that everyone is on the same page. And please get rid of the Five Pillars, WikiProjects, Glossary, and most of the How-to Guides! • I like the idea of sharing custom welcome messages and favourite questions / answers, the first of which somewhat builds on the idea I had that we should try to expand our library of available welcome / invite messages, so as to appear more personal and individualized. One does not need to know how to make a fancy box to write a good welcome message—if you want to make a pretty box, go for it. If not, don't. The more varied styles of welcome we have, the better the Teahouse can achieve its goal of being more personal and promoting of WikiLove than what help and communication has traditionally been offered here.
