Shared Knowledge/Strategic plan 2016-2020
The Strategic plan of Shared Knowledge for the 2016-2020 period closely follows that of the Wikimedia Foundation, borrowing their priorities, as well as modifying them to suit our needs as an organisation responsible for the movement in this country. These priorities are scaled-down and localised, representing our own challenges and needs.
Shared knowledge supports the Mission of the Wikimedia Foundation within Macedonia.
The planned activities are intended to develop human, organisational and material resources, enabling people to get a clear understanding of free culture and work towards spreading and strengthening it in our society.
Outline
editWe will outline the strategic plan for future Community, Education, GLAM, Science and Research programmes with long-term goals. The priorities for each of them are presented under the following relevant headings.
- Increase participation
- Improve quality
- Increase reach
- Encourage innovation
Increase participation
edit- Community
- Increasing community participation through media presence,
- Collaboration with youth organisations on a country-wide level, open days and outreach events.
- Organising editing days, edit-a-thons and editing competitions to draw participation.
- Education
- Participation in the Education programme will be increased by working with local and government authorities to encourage the Wikimedia Educational Programme to be implemented in as many schools and universities as possible. We already have such expressions of interest on behalf of the institutions.
- Shared Knowledge is also planning wider participation in Wikimedia-related events in the region and further afield. We will also organise specific visits to chapters and other movement organisations in the region in order to fester co-operation, common goals and offer mutual assistance in development towards goals.
- GLAM
- We intend to continually work on increasing the participation in our GLAM sector by engaging more Wikipedians-in-Residence and other GLAM collaborations, who in turn engage with more institutions and individuals inside them.
- Science and Research
- Engaging more individuals from faculties and schools to participate in scientific and research activities such as science themed competitions and covering scientific topics as part of the Educational Programme in schools.
- Making field trips related to science and research
- Recording scientific experiments and placing them on Wikimedia Commons as a way to popularise science, and thus, participation.
Improve quality
edit- Community
- Organise edit-a-thons within educational and cultural institutions, where we can have higher quality content being controbuted with the help of professional staff and resources.
- Organise editing competitions, which improves comprehensiveness, size and quality of articles, language style etc. - all of which are criteria for these competitions.
- Organise editing days whereby existing active editors will, on each occasion, dedicate a day editing on topics that need better quality of coverage. This is a 'boost' approach and should give good results.
- Education
- Quality in the Educational Programme will be improved by following the principles and guidelines set by the general Educationa Program of WMF, using their advise for approaches, their materials and using innovative methods ourselves.
- GLAM
- GLAM will benefit from our trend towards engaging people who are professionals in their fields of expertise, whether that be photography, knowledge or resources that compliment our work with these institutions, especially when creating content.
- Science and Research
- Quality in science and research will be improved by continual exchange of methods and experiences with chapters that already have experience and some level of achievement on these fields. Also, engaging the relevant sectors of society with the necessary expertise with the aid of authorities brings our commitments closer to qualitatively higher fruition.
- Collecting data pertaining to the use of Wikimedia projects in Macedonia and participation in them, in order to optimise the approach towards formulating policies and actions.
Increase reach
edit- Community
- Increasing reach by narrowing the gender-gap via the project WikiWomen. This includes working with women's organisations as well as working on topics that relate to women.
- We intend to enlarge our reach to as many municipalities as possible within the country through the network of affiliated or cooperating organisations that deal with youth, education and culture.
- Education
- Permanent partnership with ministries and other institutions that give us access and
- Lectures about Wikipedia in important places of events and culture in various towns to draw the attention of local media.
- GLAM
- Diversify the GLAM reach to other types of institutions (be they cultural, scientific or otherwise) and approach various local GLAM institutions in many towns to join in.
- Put an emphasis on folklore, heritage and fine arts of nationally important authors to promote them both within the country to younger generations and to the world in general.
- Science and Research
- Organising workshops and contests specifically aimed at encouraging the interest in science and research.
Encourage innovation
edit- Community
- Discussing the needs of our community and partner organisations and acting on the conclusions.
- Organise user and editor research and analytics that will measure the level of interest and impact of what we do.
- Education
- Make use of Wikipedia in schools as much as possible.
- Strengthen the trust for Wikipedia and the free knowledge movement in the teaching community.
- Provide free knowledge to rural or remote areas that are low on resources and options for personal development.
- GLAM
- Encourage the interest in free knowledge for use in the GLAM institutions.
- Provide methods of accessing free knowledge such as QR-codes, dedicated volunteers and recruit staff within institutions to seve as ambassadors for the movement.
- Science and Research
- Incubator Initiative, which is intended to go out to our members and the general public as a whole, to invite individuals and groups to submit their own ideas, that will be then moderated by us and given out as microgrants or requested as larger projects on a higher level. This is to be achieved with our Project Proposal form, which will be made available to anyone who is interested. Skills and resources will be reviewed, and alignment with movement goals will be checked.
