Building our future together

edit

In 2017, Wikimedians created a strategic direction to guide the Wikimedia Movement into the future: By 2030, Wikimedia will become the essential infrastructure of the ecosystem of free knowledge, and anyone who shares our vision will be able to join us.

Between 2018 and 2020, people from across our Movement came together in an open and participatory process to discuss how we can advance in the strategic direction. This process was initiated to develop recommendations for change in Movement culture and structures that would enable us to move toward our strategic direction and the goals of knowledge equity and knowledge as a service. What the process became was a radical effort for international collaboration that brought together hundreds of Wikimedians from across the world to discuss and create recommendations for the future of the Wikimedia Movement.

On the pages that follow, you will find stories, reflections, and insights about how the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy Recommendations were developed.

Getting started

Preparation started in March 2018. A small core team was set up to guide and support the process, and more team members joined over the course of the following year as the work itself expanded and grew. This second phase (developing the strategic direction was phase one) of the Wikimedia 2030 Movement Strategy Process officially started in April 2018 at the Wikimedia Conference. The Movement Strategy Track within the conference focused on laying the groundwork for working groups to conduct research and draft recommendations for structural and systemic change within our Movement to enable us to advance in our strategic direction. Eight thematic areas were identified to enable us to advance in our strategic direction: Advocacy, Capacity Building, Community, Diversity, Partnerships, Resource Allocation and Revenue Streams, Power Dynamics, and Technology.

Following the Wikimedia Conference, the core team started planning how to set up the working groups.
