Edit Check
edit@Kizhiya: Hello, you may interested in the current project Edit Check which is working by WMF Editing team. They also collect several ideas from community and staff for future development. --SCP-2000 02:38, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- @SCP-2000,Thank you for sharing, I will read it carefully. Kizhiya (talk) 12:35, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for posting this @SCP-2000!
- @Kizhiya, Edit check for references was tested at Japanese Wikipedia. I shared the results with the Japanese community not so long ago.
- Growth team features could also be a way to address some parts of your wish. They are already available at Japanese Wikipedia.
- I would be very curious to know if any of these solutions would help addressing your request, or if they don't. Your input really matters to us.
- Thank you, Trizek_(WMF) (talk) 16:50, 19 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Trizek (WMF),@SCP-2000,
- Thank you for the reply.
- I'm worried that if I write in English, the subtle nuances won't be conveyed, so I'll write in Japanese. I am sure JNakayama-WMF or Someone else will translate it into good English.
Kizhiya (talk) 00:34, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

- To elaborate on Kizhiya's comment, my understanding of the challenge mentioned here is prior to the phase of utilizing the EditCheck and References checks. It's around better supporting the newcomers to understand the very basics guidelines and policies including the Five Pillars in order to help them take those first steps in editing with the right mindset. How can the newcomers start editing better equipped with the knowledge of the important policies and guidelines? Or at least knowing where they can to go and check when they are not sure? Improvements on this process could potentially help the newcomers to better appreciate and utilize the Growth team features. JNakayama-WMF (talk) 03:48, 21 July 2024 (UTC)
- I think " How can the newcomers start editing better equipped with the knowledge of the important policies and guidelines?" is the main question here.
- Writing an article means knowing the sum of (almost) all policies. The Growth team initial goal is to help newcomers understanding these policies, by selecting relevant tasks to start with. Edit check offers guidance and policies discovery while editing.
- I will also open the question to collect ideas: should create an article be discouraged, with a clear invite sent after completing onboarding tasks? (Please note that it goes against the Founding principles to block all article creation.)

- @Kizhiya

The "Help" item in the sidebar
editThe "Help" page linked from the sidebar has a conspicuous item in its first screen "Create a new article". That's very poor design. We don't want to encourage new users to try to create new articles, when there's ample evidence that few will be able to manage it and many will discouraged by trying. There are many ways to help improve Wikipedia. We shouldn't do anything to steer new users towards one of the most difficult of them. Maproom (talk) 21:35, 29 October 2024 (UTC)
