Talk:Cross-project comparisons/MediaWiki:Welcomecreation and Template:Welcome comparisons
Hi! I find it a bit hard and maybe rude to edit your userpage, though this should become a legitimate article here on the Meta, I'd like to comment on the Hungarian Wikipedia:
We welcome every new contributor after his first edit(s) manually, by placing this template on their talk page, sometimes with a comment on their action, sometimes in its own right. The template uses a picture, tables, bold text (reminding of the copyright of the uploaded texts and images).
The template has an English version here, though it has a different message, using the same layout. While the Hungarian points to a in my opinion nice looking tutorial, a FAQ, the Sandbox; the English version is about getting help, and links to the VP (common in both are the suggestion to write about oneself). Bots, and people demonstrating somehow that they are foreign are usually greated this way, and maybe with a personal note for thanking them for editing at Huwiki, if they write about themselves, that they are learning Hungarian,.
The WelcomeCreation page you already mentioned, though it would seem the credit should go to the French as they had the design earlier, though I believe the text is "home made" and not a translation.
Anyway, I was happy to read compliment about the Hungarian WP.

Snazziness of welcome templates
editI might be in the minority for thinking that welcome templates (as opposed to Welcomecreation) should stay away from images and colors and tables and fancy formatting. If we include all that, making the template more like a personalized portal, the user could simply ignore the welcome message as just another part of the interface. But if we format it more like a letter (which means, sadly, plain text), they're more likely to take it as a personal message from another user. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 09:18, 4 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hm. I guess it depends if you want to play that "trick", or stress some key messages. My feeling is that I would like to re-read a colourful table, rather than a plain text list. And users tend to look at their talk pages frequently, and if it's at the top and draws their eye each time...
- Personal messages from other users are also unlikely to come with links to translations, which IMO is desirable. :)
- Icon graphics are optional, IMO, but for Wikipedia, I think this should be mandatory:

Korean Wiktionary
editActually, the Korean Wiktionary has that language category popup menu on every page, thanks to wikt:ko:MediaWiki:Monobook.js. They've done wonders to make their wiki more navigable. For Korean speakers, that is. :^)

Criteria for inclusion/sorting
editIn the future, it might be better to look at the projects with the most users, since that indicates a greater need for good welcome templates, for instance. Of course, it all depends on what you're comparing: if you're comparing MediaWiki:Noarticletext, it may make sense to look at the projects with the most articles, since those projects are more likely to have active article-writing. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 20:00, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
es.wikisource
editHi, the template for es.wikisource is Plantilla:Bienvenida. 555 15:07, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
This is another page that could be good to customise. This the text of the email that is sent to users when they confirm their email. pfctdayelise 03:56, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- Not anymore. It's use in the software has become obselete and it has been deleted by the MediaWiki system. Cbrown1023 talk 03:59, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
- If you're referring to the fact that it's been deleted by "MediaWiki default", that doesn't mean it's obsolete -- it just means the way default MediaWiki messages are handled was recently changed. If you create the page with new content, that new content will what is sent out in emails, I am pretty sure. If you know differently that this message is "obsolete", please correct me. pfctdayelise 08:30, 14 February 2007 (UTC)
thx for such an Idea!
editGreat Idea, thank you for sharing it. I think that czech Wikipedia (cs.wiki) is just before the step to create some welcome/kindness project and will need major revamp of its outreach customs towards newbees. This page is huge cluster of resources and inspirations, Thank You. --Reo On|+|+ 15:25, 3 July 2011 (UTC)
