Talk:CIS-A2K/Reports/CIS-A2K Quarterly Report 3

Thanks for this clear report! I'm concentrating comments and questions about all of it, including its subpages, in this one talk page, for ease of discussion. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations on the significant editing activity in Q1! There's a very clear bump in editorship and edits, and the 10th anniversary was clearly well-leveraged into a range of useful activities. (Statistics for April, however, suggest editorship has returned to pre-Q1 levels.) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi Asaf, The bump in editorship and edits should not be seen as an effect of 10th anniversary alone, but the training workshops and awareness sessions organised in parallel with the same. Most of the wikipedians were part of the month long process of Wiki10 celebrations and this April stats may suggest that they are enjoying their short vacation after celebrations. Also, some of the very active wikipedians have moved to Telugu Wikisource (http://stats.wikimedia.org/wikisource/EN/TablesWikipediaTE.htm), where the edit trends have gone up as well. --Rahmanuddin (talk) 11:57, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

QR codes on campus

edit

Could you explain the nature of this activity? What were QR codes attached to, exactly? Buildings? What articles did they point to? What is the expected benefit? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource

edit

What book was released? Have Telugu Wikisourcerers (a growing community!) been engaging with it? (link?) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Women activities

edit

Thank you for working toward this important goal. Have you been able to track retention at all among the 13 new editors? More generally, are you using Wikimetrics regularly? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 23:36, 30 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

  • We have developed a similar tool, that works with Mediawiki API and retrieves user contributions in last 30 days. Now that this tool is available, we would use it and track the metrics of all the users that come on board through various activities of CIS-A2K. We would appreciate a training session (even remotely) on Wikimetrics. Could you help with this? --Rahmanuddin (talk) 11:57, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Book relicensing

edit

Congratulations on successfully negotiating the relicensing of those books. It's good to see they are actively being worked on even now! However, I'm only seeing two books in Odia Wikisource so far. When will the rest be digitized and uploaded? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 01:24, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Thanks Asaf for taking a closer look and asking this.Rest of the books are scanned and will soon be put up on Wikisource. Students from KISS (one of the CIS-A2K’s institutional partner) will be digitizing these books. Currently two editors (a new editor User:Pmsarangi and Mrutyunjaya Kar) have worked together and finished one book. She is working on the second book whereas Mrutyunjaya being an experienced editor is proofreading. --Subha (talk) 08:23, 15 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Collaborative educational resource building

edit

Could you elaborate with some concrete examples what such collaboratively-built resources might be? Have any resources been built together so far? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 01:24, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Odia 10th

edit

Did anything come of the 5000-word free dictionary idea? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 01:24, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The compilers are still working on the dictionary. Once done, they could be added to Wiktionary. In the mean time a solution of converting modified/extended ASCII encoding to Unicode Odia has come up that will largely help for such large volume work of converting encoding. --Subha (talk) 08:22, 15 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Viswakosh digitization and seeding of Konkani Wikipedia

edit

I saw a fairly good engagement pattern among the enrolled students, with many of them racking up hundreds of edits on both Wikisource and the Incubator. A handful are still contributing in recent months as well. Can you share a little information on the engagement plan now that their academic obligation is over? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 03:11, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Since March 2014, CIS-A2K has subsided its active engagement (i.e. high touch) with the Konkani Wikipedia. This was to see if what we started is sustainable or not. We are happy to note that the student editors have shown a high level of enthusiasm and are determined to help grow Konkani Wikipedia. After finishing their academic program some of the active contributors are enthusiastic about 1) organising outreach workshop for their junior classes at Goa University 2) organising edit-a-thons to create articles using Konkani Vishwakosh as a source 3) aiming to organise a photo-thon in mid July once the weather is a little more supportive. We feel that we need to continue our engagement with the group through multiple channels (face-to-face, on-wiki and social media). However, most of them want to see the Konkani Wikipedia go live at the earliest and we would like to focus on helping the budding Konkani community with this process. Going forward we would like to strengthen the Goa University partnership and formalize Nirmala Institute of Education and encourage the young community to organize various outreach sessions on their own. Nirmala Goan towns project

edit

Has this project been going on? Where can I see a participant list or some evidence of content created? The project page has not been edited since February. Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 03:11, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The project has come to an end. We can provide the list of usernames privately over e-mail. We are exploring further iterations of this project (based on an assessment of how the program went) in collaboration with NIE and will share further updates as and when they are finalized. Vishwakosha release with Mysore U.

edit

Is there a project page describing the progress of this work? What, briefly, has happened since the signing of the MoU? Are veteran KNWP editors involved in this undertaking at all? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 04:04, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

The project page is here. The softcopy of the files containing Kannada text in some proprietary legacy encoding were brought. The text was extracted from the files and converted to Unicode. These Unicode text files were distributed among the volunteers. They extracted articles from these files, corrected some conversion errors, proof-read, added Wiki markup and uploaded them to Kannada Wikisource. The articles in Kannada Wikisource are linked here. The same can be reached by the category created for these articles also here. These articles will feed into Kannada Wikipedia.--Pavanaja (talk) 08:17, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Christ University program

edit

It seems to me that ~45% is a fairly low rate of acceptable contributions, considering these are university students supervised by academic staff. Could you offer a reflection on possible factors contributing to this rate? Has the KNWP community offered thoughts on this? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 04:04, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

It is for the first time a Wikipedia Education Program was held with a such a massive scale. Training almost 500 students on Wiki markup syntax was not simple. We used training videos for this purpose. Academic staff were also not fully aware of Wiki markup and the writing style for Wikipedia initially. It took some time for the faculty and students to understand these things. Probably if we were to give some more time for the program, the result might have been better. Since we have this experience with us, we expect to do far better job this academic year.--Pavanaja (talk) 08:17, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Education programs

edit

For CU, Tumkur and SDM, do you use the Education extension to help the community track WEP contributions? Do you collect usernames to track with Wikimetrics? Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 04:04, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

We have collected the usernames of the participants. Their activities are being tracked. We are yet to use the Wikimetrics tool to the full of its capability. That will be done next. Education extension was not used in these cases as it is not yet enabled for Kannada Wikipedia.--Pavanaja (talk) 08:17, 14 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

2014-15 work plan feedback

edit

I see a good deal of feedback overall on the draft 2014-2015 work plan, but at the same time some areas and languages have very little input. How are you planning to ensure adequate community review and buy-in for these parts? (or were these sections discussed on a different wiki?) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 04:48, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

(I have added a piece of feedback of my own to the Publicity piece of the plan.) Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants) talk 05:16, 1 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Asaf Bartov (WMF Grants), thanks for the detailed feedback on our 3rd quarterly report. My team members will get back on the language area specific queries. We have done our best in garnering community feedback for the four language area plan (i.e. Kannada, Konkani, Odia and Telugu). All the discussions and feedback were also documented on the respective language Wikipedias. For the other three language area plans (i.e. Bangla, Hindi and Marathi) we have posted them on the respective Wikipedia village pumps but have not yet actively reached out to the community. We wanted to do this post the FDC Grant approval as we were not sure about the continuation of the Grant and did not want to raise undue expectations from the community. Now that the FDC grant is approved we will take steps towards this. However, we may take only one new language area plan, because of the reduced grant approval.--Visdaviva (talk) 10:51, 7 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
