Talk:Interwiki bot

Today we had at the Dutch wikipedia an anonymous visitor who made a change in nl:1920 adding a link to he:1920. The change was listed in the nl:recent changes as "small change". I don't like that, because I frequently watch through the recent changes while skipping the minor changes. It was probably an interwiki bot, called HasharBot, from fr. This person is kindly requested to register a user name at nl, or not to make unregistered minor changes.

In addition, how do you botusers make sure the use is not abused, and how do you make the Wikipedia's you are visiting aware of your activities?

Thanks, Ellywa 22:41, 6 Jan 2004 (UTC) (If you reply, could you please make a short note on my dutch page)

Hello,

I am sorry for the trouble. I didn't create any account on nl: because there is already a robot there doing the job (Robbot). I just had this he: link to fix and used the robot to do so as it is easier than using my web webbrowser :))

I now have a nl account and will make changes with user Hashar. :)

Thanks Hashar, this makes live much easier for the vandal watchers, please visit us as much as you like, Ellywa 06:33, 7 Jan 2004 (UTC)

IMO the REAL question here is how it was possible for the bot to make an unregistered minor edit in the first place that sounds like a serious design fault in mediawiki.

Wiktionary

edit

Wiktionary also has a need for running an interlink robot. There are growing numbers of interlinks. GerardM 08:52, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Youu should be able to use the bot as it is now. Just add "family='wiktionary'" in your user-config.py. However, the bot has not yet been tested on Wiktionary, so I don't know whether there are still problems. - Andre Engels 15:09, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I just noticed that a run of the interwiki bot on pt changed a lot of articles just to update links like [[de: Liste der Biographien/Y]] and remove the white space after de:. Could the parsing of spaces be improved on the intewiki bot, in order to save needless article updates that just add space to the history database? -- Rui Malheiro 07:13, 7 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Wow!!!! What a source, it's rare heppens at our time to find so cool design!

pywikipedia exception file contents

How about to share these information? For example, this will be helpful to run interwikibot for month names.

[[en:September]] != [[cs:Srpen]]
[[en:December]] != [[ga:Nollaig]]

This page is nice to have...

...but if we seriously want to make the interwiki links work better, we need more than just the cooperation between bot operators.

Since the number of interwikilinks per article in n languages can be as high as n * ( n-1 ), and Wikipedia is growing, we have to consider the problems we are facing: if we have as many as 30 interwiki links on a page, there is a total of abt. 1,000 interwiki's for that particular page. If just one of these points to a wrong page, problems occur that cannot be solved easily using a bot, without doing some extra work by hand as well.

We need people who speak their languages, plus a regular (bot) maintenance on all languages in a project. To do that, a namespace on meta for interwiki discussions should be of help. At least, this is my opinion -- Quistnix 00:16, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Perhaps the bot should recognise a comment like
"<!-- do not process interwiki here! -->"
which operators/editors could place on pages that need to be 'fixed' by hand (like recently created disambiguations pages). Just a thought. / tsca 14:39, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I see I wasn't the first to think of that: there already is an Interwiki conflict template. Now the software must learn to recognise it. / tsca 21:41, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Current bot version

edit

The link on the page was referring to an old version of the Wikipediabot. It is important for all bot operators to upgrade to the current version at http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywikipediabot/ .

Please do not forget to delete all *.pyc files in the bot directory AND in its subdirectories, before running the new bot.

There is a new bot version! http://sourceforge.net/projects/pywikipediabot/

There are lots of articles in Persian wikipedia with not link to/from english. I've started to put links manually but its very time consuming. Can I use this bot to facilitate this? 81.179.124.59 12:12, 28 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Return to "Interwiki bot" page.
