Sub-projects
editImplicit in the datamodel for the Ultimate Wiktionary are the following two entities:
- Languages
- Scripts
It would definitely be useful to share these two data groups with other projects, and I hope during implementation of the Ultimate Wiktionary an eye is kept toward that goal.
From the stand-point of planning and organization, though, here are two questions:
- Should the Language and Script entities be separated into a "utility" Wikidata wiki?
- Regardless of the answer to the preceding question, should implementation of language and script datasets in Wikidata have their own milestone?
- I do not like implicit things. State what you want to say explicitly for us to know what you are on about.
- there are two things
- there is code to create WikiData and all its related UI.
- there is the implementation of the WikiData code in projects.
- The structure of the ultimate wiktionary is what will be delivered under the plan. The implementation of the texts that will make things work properly is OUTSIDE of the deliverable. That is what the community will work on. I assume that is what you call languages. The words will be in their script. Things like transcriptions and transliterations are as far as I am concerned not part of ultimate wiktionary and when they should be, they will be language dependent like defintions and etymology.
- So to answer your question: I do not know what you are on about. This is what I guess is an answer to your question. Yes, it can be a sub project but the completion of the software is not reliant on this to finish. GerardM 07:13, 18 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- As part of the Ultimate Wiktionary project a datamodel for the Languages entity will be defined and then populated by users of the wiki. Since this is a very basic entity, other Wikidata-based wikis will probably need to define it as well. My question was regarding common datasets such as this and if/how they may be shared. To limit the discussion to just the features of the Wikidata software:
- * Will Wikidata allow datasets in different Wikidata-wikis (including those running within separate databases) to be shared/transcluded?

- There will be a file that has the language names in it. However, I do not know if it will be as basic as you assume. It will need its localisation information for starters.
- Sharing data with other Wikidata projects makes sense. So far, this has not been considered. When a project shares data from another project, it is the primary project that IS primary so assuming that we have maintainers / moderators, they are the ones that will maintain the data in line with the goal of that project. A database is in some respects not very wiki. It takes time and effort to implement a good ERD, changes to the ERD / database will be implemented when consensus has been reached within the community. This template will point from the discussion pages of all the different proposals for a single Wiktionary DataBase to the one page where all discussion on the subject of a single Wiktionary Database is conducted, to create a discussion of that purpose, rather than of each proposal separately.
