On copyright... I know that at least Norwegian maps (made by the Norwegian Mapping Agnecy) always state that they are copyrighted and that it is illegal to digitize them. As a result of this maps in Norway are rather expensive, and I think we have to be careful that the sources used are truly public domain. -- Gustavf 11:18, 18 Aug 2003 (UTC)

UK Ordnance Survey maps are also copyright. They go as far as adding small deliberate errors (e.g. on a street map XXX Road rather than the official XXX Lane or changing the shape of the corner of a wood slightly) in order to allow them to detect and prove that data originated from their survey. --81.174.203.172 21:19, 23 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Couldn't map be created collaboratively in the future?

edit

I wonder, since digital photography is cheap now, would it be possible to create some software that would allow making of maps from digital pictures of landscape, taken from various points. This way, people could get a map (or even a 3D model) of their neighborhood for themselves, and then combine these to get the result.

There was software which turned photos into 3D models, Canoma, but it wasn't automatic. It came from MetaCreations, who sold it to Adobe when they decided they weren't going to do software any more.

Maybe the real solution is GPS PDAs? There are already tracking systems which can record routes and place them on the map, we just need a little reversal and place the map on them!

There is a project at http://mapgeneration.berlios.de to develop a software that allows automatic generation of road maps from GPS data. I think there are also project out there that collect data for points of interest. --212.204.0.45 09:01, 11 July 2005 (UTC)Reply

Are they copyrighted too?

Is there...

...a map making collaboration available for any of the projects? (BTW, the current page is difficult to understand, and the layout is pretty awkward. can someone do something to improve it?) Aditya Kabir 05:19, 30 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Return to "Maps" page.
