Diversity

edit

Walaa (ar:User:لا روسا) is now one of only two female admins on Arabic Wikipedia. The other one is ar:User:Ravan promoted on 3 June 2013. Also, Walaa is now number 70 on the Arabic list of Wikipedians by number of edits. --Meno25 (talk) 15:29, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Awesome! It's great to see the diversity grow on the Arabic Wikipedia! -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 16:16, 11 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Statistics

edit

It was nice to hear you're happy about the Arabic university program. Today I've read in another page that «As the education program grew, WMF notes a parallel increase of about 10% in the number of articles on Arabic Wikipedia». Stats are always difficult to correlate: I see in stats:EN/ChartsWikipediaAR.htm "New wikipedians" is more or less the same since August 2009, while "Active wikipedians" has a slight increase since September 2011; stats:EN/TablesWikipediansEditsGt5.htm shows monthly fluctuations probably bigger than usual on Wikipedias; stats:EN/TablesDatabaseWords.htm is luckily up to date for ar and shows a constant trend since 2010 (confirmed by the more cheatable stats:EN/TablesDatabaseSize.htm). --Nemo 11:28, 12 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hi Nemo, sorry I didn't see this earlier -- I clearly missed it while I was on vacation. I am afraid I can't help much with your question about the 10% article number increase, as I have no clue where that number came from (I didn't provide it). But I can talk to the numbers of active and very active editors. I used the UserMetrics API to create a table of all of our students' number of edits in the article namespace each month, and then ran a COUNTIF for 5+ and 100+. I then took those numbers and used the stats:EN/TablesWikipediaAR.htm counts of 5+ and 100+ Arabic Wikipedia editors to determine the percentages of the editors who were our students each month. It varies per month (I imagine you won't be surprised to discover that the majority of students are most active at the end of the term when their assignments are due), but it averages out to about 10% each month (it ranges between 6% and 14% in the months when students are active). Hope this helps clarify. -- LiAnna Davis (WMF) (talk) 00:14, 10 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
