- @Sotiale is there any thing that we need to improve, cause i see that tagalog wikisource is approved recently. Thank you Agus Damanik (talk) 05:49, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
- I started a discussion about approval because I thought your project met the requirements for approval at the time I initiated that thread. However, none of my colleagues responded. The only advice I can give you is to increase the number of pages from the current number and to keep active. I will send a reminder email to start the discussion again. --Sotiale (talk) 08:42, 18 March 2025 (UTC)

Bengali Wikinews
editHello, I am an active editor of Bengali Wikinews. The Bengali Wikinews is a highly active test project, and I am requesting its approval. Mobashir - 🇧🇩 (talk) 05:43, 15 March 2025 (UTC)
- Very positive, but I would like to see activity next month(April). If activity is similar to the current one next month, I would like to start a discussion for approval. --Sotiale (talk) 15:22, 29 March 2025 (UTC)
- @Sotiale Can you give us any update? We are so excited! Mobashir - 🇧🇩 (talk) 05:18, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, I have a problem with this that I can't reveal right now. I heard that it will be released soon. This is not your problem, so don't worry too much. --Sotiale (talk) 13:06, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
- Hi, @Sotiale, Is there anything the community or editors can do to help resolve the issues? Thanks. Asked42 (talk) 14:34, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
- Oh! Thanks @Asked42. I was thinking about this type of answer. Mobashir - 🇧🇩 (talk) 14:35, 21 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Asked42: Unfortunately, there is nothing I am authorized to disclose at this time. I'll let you know when it's officially released. Or maybe this has already been made public, but I haven't caught on yet. I want to emphasize again that this is not your community's problem. --Sotiale (talk) 14:02, 27 April 2025 (UTC)
- @Sotiale Thank you for the clarification, but we still do not fully understand the issue. Mobashir - 🇧🇩 (talk) 15:01, 27 April 2025 (UTC)

Ancient Greek is a “living”, “L2-speakers-only” language according to SIL
editRespected Sirs and Madams,
Hi!
Last year, we discussed the admissibility of an Ancient Greek Wikipedia. Amir E. Aharoni sent an e-mail to SIL (the organization which manages both ISO 639 and Ethnologue, as you know), asking to clarify why they classify Ancient Greek both as an “historical language” and as a “living language” (I have not "unarchived" our 2024 conversation because it was very long; let me know if I should do otherwise; for those who might want to read it again, it was titled “Classical languages”).
Since I did not receive any news, I have also tried to write to SIL, asking some questions, and they confirmed that “‘historical’ language does not imply ‘extinct’”. They also provided me with this Ancient Greek language card: grc language status is “code 9” (“second language only”), while “extinct” would be represented by code 10.
Here is their definition of code 9:
"Second Language Only status. While there are many languages that are used as second languages by large populations of speakers, the phrase “Second language only” is used to identify a specific category made up of those languages which are used as second languages but have no L1 speakers and generally weak or secondary ethnic or identity associations. These may include languages of special use, such as languages of initiation, languages of interethnic communication, liturgical languages, as well as cants and jargons. Most often these languages are given a status of EGIDS 3 (Wider Communication) but are identified in this way as well because of the absence of L1 speakers."
On the one hand, it is true that no one speaks just Classical Greek and no “modern” language; on the other hand, SIL is a bit too hasty when it describes the contemporary use of Ancient Greek as just "religious". In fact, Classical Greek is also used by classicists as a vehicular language: Today, it is possible to find classes taught in Classical Greek (even online, e.g. this reading and commentary in Classical Greek of the Apology of Socrates); it is even possible to learn other languages through Classical Greek, such as Ancient Persian: this is particularly interesting, because it is difficult to find classes of Ancient Persian even in “modern” languages.
For these reasons – along with those I have already expressed in 2024 – I’d like to ask you to revise your restrictive policy towards Classical Greek, and to admit the theoretical possibility of an Ancient Greek Wikipedia (maintaining firm that it must meet also the other admissibility criteria, before final approval). Thank you very much for your attention! Anaxicrates (talk) 18:07, 3 April 2025 (UTC)
- I'd like to report to you that on Monday, April 14, UNESCO's Executive Board unanimously adopted a decision proposing the proclamation of February 9th as "World Greek Language Day". This is indeed a recognition of the special value of the Greek language, since this privilege has been accorded to no more than 8 other international languages. In particular, Classical Greek played a crucial role in this decision, as you may read in the Explanatory Note on the UNESCO website. There, among other things it is stated that:
Greek combines four particularly significant characteristics:
1) An unbroken continuity of 40 centuries of oral tradition and 35 centuries of written tradition [...].
2) A highly elaborated structure as a language (vocabulary, grammar and syntax), due to its use by unparalleled historical figures of literature, poetry, theatre, philosophy, politics and science, such as Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Aeschylus, Thucydides, Hippocrates, Archimedes [...].
3) A widespread presence in many languages, as, over time, Greek has been one of the most important languages in terms of its influence on all other European languages and, through them, in the world of languages [...].
4) The Greek language was and remains to this day an inexhaustible source of international scientific terminology [...]. This is an internationally recognized feature of Greek, which is clearly documented, based on empirical and historical data.
As the linguistic cradle of basic concepts of culture, science and philosophy, Greek holds, by historical and objective criteria, a distinct place among the languages of the world [...].
Historically, the Greek language occupies a key position in intellectual thought, in the linguistic expression and formulation of fundamental concepts and key words of European and wider, almost universal intellectual thought which are conveyed, understood or traced in words/concepts of the Greek language.- Thanks for your attention! Yours, Anaxicrates (talk) 17:37, 17 April 2025 (UTC)

Création d'un wikipédia en langue pazande
editBonjour,
Mbï a zïmbi mo sï mbï sô na gbêtê wiki na pazande. Pazande azzî gï mô ti mbênî na Ködörözêse tî Afrika, Kongö na Südan. Kasi na internet, ayekée lïngdï sô na pazande.
Wiki na pazande ape gï tî :
- Tî fîngö pazande sô ayeke pû,
- Tî kûa na mo sô yeke sîngö pazande,
- Tî gï pazande pû sô na internet.
Sô lo yeke gba ndë, mbï yeke gï sï na kûa.

editHello Language Committee, the following proposed Wikisource projects in the Philippine languages: Hiligaynon, Ilokano, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Sinugboanon, Waray have been active for at least 5 months (hil, ilo, pam, pan, ceb, war) due to the Wikisource Loves Manuscripts PH program launched in June 2024, and the community would like the project to be reviewed for approval.
There is no Wikimedia project yet in Hiligaynon language. --Filipinayzd (talk) 05:27, 25 April 2025 (UTC)
