Non-standard formatnum

edit

Hi, Johan. Are you sure it's a feature, not a bug? Trying 123,456.78 on ruwiki, I get the horrible 123,456,78. Maybe it's better to wait until the grouping will be implemented too? IKhitron (talk) 16:00, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply

Ping Quiddity (WMF). /Johan (WMF) (talk) 16:12, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
As far as I can tell, this feature is not completely implemented yet. Therefor I have moved the item down into the "Future changes" section, but I've also pinged a dev to give a sanity check. Thanks, both. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 19:00, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
Your example actually illustrates the incorrect markup very well! It should be {{formatnum:123456.78}} not {{formatnum:123,456.78}}. The former works correctly, as you can verify at User:Cscott/formatnum on ruwiki . The latter case will (in addition to rendering horribly) also now put the page in the new maintenance category to help identify and correct the error. Cscott (talk) 20:55, 29 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
I know. The tracking category is a good thing, but the bug is still here: there is no way to convert an international format to the local one. IKhitron (talk) 11:50, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
The international format is "123456.78".
"123,456.78" isn't "international", it's "already rendered in someone else's locale". Jdforrester (WMF) (talk) 16:51, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
FWIW, there's also a 'R' option, but that converts a number *formatted in your locale* to the international format, as James says.
Agreed that there is not an option that lets you specify a BCP-47 code to translate a number in an arbitrary locale to the international format. It would be necessary to precisely specify which locale you want to translate from, because "123,456" and "123.456" are ambiguous. Cscott (talk) 23:21, 30 October 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Quiddity (WMF), Johan (WMF), Cscott, and Jdforrester (WMF): When I linked the category I assumed English-language links would always work, like Special:ListGroupRights on nlwiki which redirects to Speciaal:GroepsrechtenWeergeven. But here, it appears, this doesn't work. Category:Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments on nlwiki doesn't redirect to Categorie:Wikipedia:Pagina's met niet-numerieke formatnum-argumenten. As an alternative we can link to d:Q99593300 instead I suppose. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:03, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Alexis Jazz: The link doesn’t point to Category:Pages with non-numeric formatnum arguments, but rather to {{ns:14}}:{{MediaWiki:nonnumeric-formatnum}}, that is, to the page specified in MediaWiki:nonnumeric-formatnum in the wiki’s content language, prefixed by the localized namespace name. By the way, this latter is not strictly necessary, as English namespace names do redirect to the localized ones: nl:Category:Wikipedia:Pagina's met niet-numerieke formatnum-argumenten works fine. (Formerly it pointed to {{ns:14}}:{{int:nonnumeric-formatnum/{{CONTENTLANGUAGE}} }}, which also works most of the cases, only fails when the category name is customized in the MediaWiki namespace, like on Dutch Wikipedia.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 15:27, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
@Tacsipacsi: Oh that's right, I forgot it wasn't just a static link. So it's no problem. Thanks for fixing it for custom names. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 17:38, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

All modern operating systems and browsers are always able to reach Wikimedia projects.

@Quiddity (WMF): Bold statement. You couldn't have tested them all. Plenty of obscure but modern shit out there, like manufacturer- (especially for mobile devices) or country-specific browsers. Sure you support all the major modern operating systems and browsers, perhaps consider adding "major". — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 12:58, 1 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

True. I also dislike over-generalizations, but missed this one. However this week's edition was delivered by Trizek before I saw this note. So it goes. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 18:07, 2 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
