Discrepancies
editI see significant discrepancies between the English version [1] and the Japanese version [2] - facts/factoids mentioned in one version are not mentioned in the other.
- "Kobe" (神戸) is mentioned in the English version, but not in the Japanese version.
- "著作権違反" (copyright violation) is mentioned in the Japanese version, but not in the English version.
- "Art+Feminism" is mentioned in the table in the Japanese version, but not in the English counterpart.
There are more instances of discrepancies like this. To be fair, it seems safe to say more than half of the two documents do match, though. If the discrepancies are simply translation errors, I would fix them, but I don't think that is the case. If I had to guess, one of the two might have been the final version while the other was an incomplete draft. The team might have prepared two versions targeting different audiences, or the person who created the Japanese version might have taken the liberty to add and omit. It does not seem like one of the two is clearly more detailed than the other, however. The whole thing is confusing to me. Unfortunately, the people who created the two pages, NNair (WMF) and YSaigo (WMF), cannot be reached. Can anyone else offer explanation?
I actually think there can be two slightly different versions in different languages with none of them taking precedence, but if that is indeed the case, don't we want to stop designating them as an 'original' and 'translated' versions? whym (talk) 10:41, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
- Until somebody offers clarification, I think we should stop marking the page for translation. Otherwise translators might waste their time translating an incomplete document while overwriting a more complete one. whym (talk) 11:38, 2 March 2022 (UTC)
- I have not unmarked the page, but discouraged it. Maybe Xeno or Mehman can help? -- Pols12 (talk) 13:52, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- Whym & Pols12 Since I started in 2021 after this work was done I don’t have an answer for you right away, though I will confer with my colleague YShibata (WMF) to see if we can find out why there are discrepancies and how to address. Xeno (WMF) (talk) 14:29, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Whym,@Pols12,@Xeno (WMF),I'll check pages around the date soon. YShibata (WMF) (talk) 14:56, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
- I hope it's not too difficult to find internal documentation somewhere. I also fear that because it has been nearly two years, it might be the case that nobody present knows the details. It might be wise to admit that these pages have unresolved problems, and leave at that. I wish I had noticed the oddities before the people who wrote the pages departed. whym (talk) 06:14, 20 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Whym,@Pols12,@Xeno (WMF), I found the date YSaigo resigned was June 30. The date of YSaigo edited the page was June 21. I found YSaigo made so many responses sincerely on UCoC and related pages for the ja community. Probably there was no time to make the 2 pages perfect. YShibata (WMF) (talk) 13:30, 25 March 2022 (UTC)
- @YShibata (WMF) Thank you. Is there anything we can do now based on that findings? (Again, I'm not accusing, I just want to have the situation clarified. If the conclusion is "it looks like we are going nowhere from here", at least that much will be clear.) whym (talk) 13:17, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
- @Whym,@Pols12,@Xeno (WMF), seems we can do nothing on these 2 pages. "to stop designating them as an 'original' and 'translated' versions" suppose to be the conclusion. YShibata (WMF) (talk) 09:44, 20 April 2022 (UTC)
