SVG images

How about switching from PNG to SVG images? PLEASE NOTE: these are shown larger (90px) than the default size (45px) to show detail!

Before I create all of them, I wanted to get feedback on the idea. The files themselves are about twice as big but I see three distinct advantages:

1. size of the board & pieces can scale without problem (as shown above)
2. SVGs are rendered as PNGs so as an end-user there is no difference
3. SVG-based generated PNGs seem to be smaller than the current PNGs

Using SVG sounds like fantastic idea; I'm surprised there has been no feedback. Are the SVG-based generated PNGs cached? John Vandenberg 05:45, 4 August 2007 (UTC)

Quite. There are numerous advantages, the biggest of which is of course that you'll only need one set of images for all sizes. The only disadvantage would be speed of drawing, if SVGs render slower (unlikely at this complexity) or are not cached as well (probably likely). Jdorje 17:41, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Also there appear to be 86 pieces available on the standard chess template. You'd have to replace all of these to get a replacement setup IMO. Jdorje 18:14, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Ah yes: and then for a 5-minute mockup, seen here. It appears at the 26-pixel size many of the SVG images render poorly. Given the roughness of the rendering I wonder if this isn't an error in the renderer. Jdorje 19:39, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Yeah, SVGs tend to look a little aliasy when thin lines are rendered at small resolutions. I think SVG is definitely the way to go though. I didn't realize someone had already created these chess pieces... I was about to do so myself. Just restarting this discussion, I've made various missing fairy pieces as per the request on Wikipedia's graphics lab. However, I have various points to raise regarding placement and background etc. I have some ideas here: w:User:NikNaks93/Chess. My main issue is that some fairy pieces share letters, so should be adressed, along with the background discrepancy. 86.28.81.125 12:24, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Chess diagram designer

Be sure of checking my ChessDesigner. It's built using HTML/CSS, some JavaScript and the SVG images from the template.

Transparent SVGs

How about using transparent SVGs (rendered as transparent PNGs) on top of colored (light or dark) backgrounds? This will allow using only half of the images that are currently used in the template. And moreover, we could create different styles of pieces and backgrounds without the need of changing many images at once. I know IE 6 has problems with transparent PNGs, but... does it matter? --Ricordisamoa (talk) 23:29, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

I'm pretty sure that pawn means something in english, but i'm not sure what to add
