Thank you for your interest in membership in the Wikimedia Foundation.
The Wikimedia Foundation has several types of membership for individuals. One is Volunteer Active Membership; this is given to anyone interested in supporting the activities of the Foundation who has contributed under a user name to a Wikimedia project. Two other memberships are defined in Bylaws, however, currently both of no such members have yet been specified. The second one is Contributing Active Membership. It will be possible to become a contributing active member by paying membership dues. The third one is Sustaining Membership.
On Board meetings in June 2005, changes to the membership were proposed. Until single sign on is in operation, the only determination of membership will be through casting a vote in the Board elections. Voters will automatically be classed as members if they were eligible to vote. The election committee is asked to make this clear in the instructions for voters. The board can recognize people for special contributions as being eligible to vote by classifying them as 'sustaining members'. No such members have yet been specified.
We are still developing our membership system. Details (such as where to sign up to become a Contributing Active Member) will be determined after further discussion.
Discussions in July 2004 regarding membership dues led to the following proposal:
Becoming a Contributing Active Member will cost 60 USD (or the equivalent), and will not require being an editor of a Wikimedia project. Volunteer Active Members may become Contributing Active Members for 6 USD, but are encouraged to pay the normal fee if they can. Members can choose how they wish a portion of their fee to be used (for instance, "30 dollars should be used only for hardware purchases").
There will be no obligation to pay dues; adding to and benefiting from projects will always be free. Contributing money is only an additional way of helping the project. The full membership proposal may be found on meta under "membership fees"; questions about membership are answered in the membership FAQ. For further discussion, please see also Membership.
