Liberation of content

edit

Hi ! I have a lot of questions regarding this part :

  • Can you define "high-quality content" more precisely ?
As a bottom line, I would say we're aiming at content that has a greater chace of being used and reused in and outside of Wikimedia projects. This said, defining quality is hard and also a bit subjective, so we'll probably define this in the course of our actions. notafish }<';> 07:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • "10% of the content should not be older than three years" -> Will you count 2010 photography of hundred years old sculptures as older of younger than three years ?
I'd say younger. What we're talking about here is making content available on the Wikimedia Projects under a free license. If we're talking about 100 year-old sculptures for which there are today no digital iconography for example, and that we manage to make them available, then the content should be tagged as "new", not as "old". To take a parallel with what Wikimedia France has done, the content uploaded within the frame of WMFR's partnership with the Museum d'Histoire Naturelle de Toulouse would be labelled as "new", although the subjects of the pictures are definitely "old". notafish }<';> 07:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • More importantly, how will the 210,000€ be spend ? Will you pay the Wikipedians in residence ?
I do not think that we plan to "pay" as such (as in a "salary") Wikipedians in residence, although this might be assessed on a case by case basis depending on needs, profile of Wikipedians in residence, etc. At this stage, we are developing programs for Wikipedians in residence but have no definite plan how this is going to work. It will all depend on the institutions we manage to reach and the interest they show in our projects, as well as the resources we will need to dispatch for this. This can range from having someone in the office manage 45 Wikipedians in residence on an administrative level, to publishing tons of brochures to help the Wikipedian in residence program, or even develop Mediawiki extensions to make content liberation super easy. These are just "ideas thrown in there", and might never see the light of day, for the record. We are trying to leave ourselves room for success by not outlining every single detail quite yet, especially because these are new and developping programs and should be given room to expand and take shape following the specific needs of institutions and supporting Wikimedia projects and community actors. notafish }<';> 07:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

I think it's a great idea to include a partner-free liberation as a sustainability proof, But how do you acheive that ?

Well, the trick is... we don't achieve it. The point this program line wants to make is that while it is a good thing if we actively work to liberate content, it is an even better thing if we manage to work at changing mentalities in such a way that institutions come to the idea of liberating content themselves. So this goal is here to stress the importance we are giving to "changing mentalities" as opposed to "doing everything ourselves". notafish }<';> 07:24, 11 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
