#wikimedia-tech
editAre you sure you want a flood of users in -tech? Wouldn't it be better to have them storm into #wikipedia as usual? Snowolf How can I help? 19:10, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
- The current practice favored by the Operations team is for users to report issues in #wikimedia-tech. They have another channel (#wikimedia-operations) that they can moderate if the need arises. That said, as far as I know, #wikipedia is still the channel advertised in the Error page, so people will storm there if Wikipedia is down. guillom 20:48, 19 January 2013 (UTC)
It is absolutely ridiculous!
editRussian translate for Virginia is Виргиния, not Вирджиния! Amend it immediately! 188.255.97.14
- User:Guillom has already correct it, thanks to him. 188.255.97.14 15:36, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
the IRC url is wrong
editthe correct URL is irc://irc.freenode.net/#wikimedia-tech
the current URL is irc://irc.freenode.net/wikimedia-tech
(Note: it is likely that your IRC cliet will automatically fix this error, but not all IRC clients do this automatically. for example, HexChat and X-Chat, does not.) Divinity76 (talk) 15:29, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- I am pretty sure I had the issue of irc://irc.freenode.net/#wikimedia-tech joinining ##wikimedia-tech (aka # automatically prefixed). There is an IETF draft for the irc URL but nothing firm yet : http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-butcher-irc-url-04#section-2.5.1
- Some client seems to recognize irc://#channel@server.tld too :)

Banner for anonymous readers
editThe banner is also for non-logged-in users. This means that the final comment to ask "fellow Wikimedians on your local community" is not really helpful for >99% of the users. --Tobias talk · contrib 15:52, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
Just wanted to say that although the article was pretty technical, much effort to explain medical terms in plain English helped me to be able to read through the article and comprehend the information in a more fluent way as opposed to loosing the thought by researching terms. I might add that despite my email/login name I am not a medical doctor but more of an electronics/handyman/poet/lover/chef to be exact.
The reason I logged in was to make a request regarding the very detailed example image of an actual dissected heart which apparently shows an example of heart muscle swelling or thickening, i.e. heart disease. Problem is, similar to the Medical terms I am not familiar with, I am also unfamiliar with what the inside of heart 'normally' looks like. Therefore even if this was the best pic ever taken of a heart with this disease type, since I don't have a healthy heart to compare to from an 'all things equal except the disease' subject, I wouldn't be able to tell it from a healthy heart.
I would look at Hi-Fi loudspeakers in a similar way. If the only speaker you have ever seen and heard was played for you by a friend it becomes just a point of reference. Only after you have heard at least one more speaker can you actually 'learn' something, by the comparison, and begin to form an opinion from your own judgement keeping in mind, of course, that your judgement at that point is extremely limited but never-the-less valid to that extent. With out it you have effectively learned 'nothing' about differences in speakers, just heard one you were told sounded Butterscotchy in the upper mid-range harmonics and therefore walk away without ownership of the opinion and therefore will, most likely soon forget. ...unless of course they used the term butterscotchy blah blah blah. In which case you may remember it for the rest of your life and try and explain how it relates to diseased hearts on day years later when you are procrastinating over doing some actual work.
I hope you understand what I'm getting at because it applies to so many pictures of disasters, aging, what the wheat crop looked like last year when it didn't rain, etc. etc. I want to walk away from an article feeling I learn a lot ...and have by reading. But as it has been said many times before, a picture is worth a thousand words.
Thanks for considering all ye article contributors, I know what I'm asking for is sometimes close to impossible to actually get due to a number of issues, but if and when you can it is appreciated by so many who thank you as well as so many more for granted-takers who don't think about the effort or even consider big difference it has made in comprehension of a subject. But hey, it's just a small way to start paying back some of our karmic debt in advance.
will be back to final edit & submit when maintenance is finished
Wikia
editHi all, does the maintenance have any effect to Wikia..? it's not working at all. Greetings Supermohi (talk) 18:56, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Should not be. --Stryn (talk) 19:21, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- I wonder :) Supermohi (talk) 19:23, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Nope, if Wikia is having problems, they're unrelated. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 19:40, 22 January 2013 (UTC)
- Maybe the sudden increase of uneditability of the world sent many wiki editors to Wikia melting its servers? :) --Nemo 10:17, 23 January 2013 (UTC)
