Does official Wikipedia iOS app support deep link?
I heard the official Wikipedia android app support deep link, so I wonder if the ios app support deep link too.
If yes, then our app can call Wikipedia ios app directly to help user re-engage Wikipedia app.

Fault with PEG grants Endorse button
Hi All
Sorry if this is the wrong place to put this, please can you suggest somewhere better if it's not. I'm applying for a PEG grant from WMF and have realised that the Endorse button on the application doesn't work in mobile view, it doesn't bring up the form. It does however click which may lead people to think that they have endorsed it if they're not expecting a box to pop up. Here's my application as an example (I've added an ugly work around with instructions for now).
Cheers
Mrjohncummings (talk) 18:27, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
- The button's code is from a gadget and all gadgets are enabled by default on desktop only. It can be enabled by adding
|targets=desktop,mobile
to the gadget's RL entry at definitions. I could enable it but would like to know whether it would work as expected on mobiles. @Jeph paul and Jmorgan (WMF):. --Glaisher (talk) 04:04, 25 January 2015 (UTC)- We have not tested it on mobiles. It uses mediawiki.ui, Jquery.ui for the dialogs etc. We are testing the gadget on test.wikipedia.org. We could give you a definitive answer after we run a few tests there.--Jeph paul (talk) 05:13, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Numbered lists
Hi! I'm translating Open Content - A Practical Guide to Using Creative Commons Licences/Guide into Italian. The titles of some sections contain a sort of numbered list with letters: e.g.: a) Number one, b) Number two, etc. When I reproduced the scheme into Italian, the system gave an error message, because it "reads" symbols like a) or b) as if they are missing a bracket: in other words, it expects a double bracket like this: ( ... ).
The problem is that, since the system considers it as a mistake, it doesn't allow me to save the section with the translation. As a result, in the preview page of the translation some section titles are still in English.
Can anybody help me fix the problem? Thank you for your attention. Tonkawa68 (talk) 19:14, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

getting started on downloading data set
(Am looking for forum where question below can be asked. If this is wrong place, please point in right direction.)
can someone please get me started on downloading data?
am looking for a way to get every government organization in the world a raw dataset
Where is the data?
What are the fields that will let me query the file? Are there field descriptors anywhere?
While there may not be specific wikipedia fields indicating whether an organization is a government entity or not, there may be a URL field value that ends .gov or other indicators. Any hints would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Thnaks PiRSquared17. (1) I don't know where data sets are and where they are described. (2) How to download.
Where is data described? Are there small samples so don't have to download giant files to find out how they look?
Looking for data that would allow finding of all government organizations. There's probably not a specific file like that but perhaps be derived by a gov URL.
Any help would be great.

Downloading page view statistics per page
Hello, Could anyone help me with downloading and ordering daily page view statistics for ca. 125 pages on enwiki for ca. 25 month periods in a spreadsheet format? The only option I found is to download JSONs from stats.grok.se, then convert and combine them one by one, but over 3000 pieces seem an awfully lot to do manually. I would need it for my Master thesis. Matthew Beta (talk) 08:35, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- Well, you clearly need to script it. :) You can write something like mediacounts-stats.py and use the monthly merged counts as input. Otherwise, if you prefer to use quick & dirty UNIX commands, you could download the 25 files and then just do a grep -E with suitable regex matching your 125 titles properly escaped and (de)normalised. If your aim is to do serious research, remember to consider the redirect (and prefer the scripting). --Nemo 09:09, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you for your answer! The part I understand is that you suggested to consider the redirects: does this mean that article traffic coming from redirects are not counted in the page views of the actual article? Also, at the UNIX part I think you assume that I need the data from the same 25 month for each article, but it is not the case. Unfortunately, I didn't understand the rest :). I have no experience in scripting, or with UNIX commands, or in anything of the sort. (I mean I can put together quite complex wikimedia templates, or find the thing I want to change in html, but that's kind of all.) Do you know if I could find someone somewhere who could help me with what you just described? - Matthew Beta (talk) 18:35, 24 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Nemo bis: So… no suggestion where I can find someone who would script it for me just out of human goodness :D? - Matthew Beta (talk) 07:42, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
- @Matthew Beta: Did you read the grep -E documentation and about regular expressions? Which specific parts are unclear? What blocks you from hacking this up, given the hints above? --Malyacko (talk) 07:58, 30 April 2015 (UTC)
- Really, I don't even know how to begin, since I've never done anything like that. I mean, sure, I understand what regular expressions are, and I am able to put together a simple one with the help of a documentation, but I've never used UNIX. I started to look it up, I guess I'd need something like Cygwin? But if it's too much trouble, I still have the option to use different data from other sources (that don't need scripting or commands but are worse quality). - Matthew Beta (talk) 11:23, 30 April 2015 (UTC)

Punctuation
There's something that has been bothering me for a long time with your website's encyclopedia articles. I'm a court reporter, and I create legal transcripts for a living. I'm an expert on punctuation. Your articles consistently show incorrect usage of the quotation marks with commas and periods. Periods and commas ALWAYS go INSIDE quotation marks, no exceptions. Please look it up if you don't believe me. I believe Wikipedia would be perceived as more professional if your punctuation was correct.
This is an example. Here is a sentence from a Wikipedia article entitled Amanda Bynes: A month later, Bynes had an apparent change of heart and "unretired".[23] The correct usage is: A month later, Bynes had an apparent change of heart and "unretired." [23]
It is a common mistake for a layperson but not a professional organization such as Wikipedia.
Just my two cents.
Thank you. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 173.165.48.243 (talk) 18:05, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
- Wikipedia articles are most often written by non-professionals (laypersons). Ruslik (talk) 19:42, 9 June 2015 (UTC)
- You appear to be advocating the "American" style for quotation marks. Depending on the wiki the "British" or "logical" style may be preferred, as is the case on the English Wikipedia for example. You can read more about these two styles at w:Quotation marks in English#Order of punctuation. Anomie (talk) 13:30, 10 June 2015 (UTC)

Setting user permissions on files uploaded
Is there a way to set user permissions on files that are uploaded to the images directory so that I could restrict who can read which files?
- Is that a general question for files at Wikimedia (the sites)? If so, then no; files uploaded are made available for use, that is the purpose of free access. If that is a Mediawiki question (the application), then you would be better off to use the mediawiki-l mailing list. — billinghurst sDrewth 10:38, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
dead and recovered links
at the beginning of Wikipedia many links on the site had references to www.thailex.info... The later domain name no longer exists and is now registered as www.thailex.asia. I can seen that many links were recovered and now refer to thailex.asia, though not in all cases... Hence this is a notice to let you know that all the links on Wikipedia are dead, unless repointed to the new name www.thailex.asia. This is the case in a number of languages, from this to Japanese and Dutch, as well as many other. Can this be fixed in one go. I see it has been done for the English Wiki, where the links are now pointing to thailex.asia with a note that reads recovered. O=In other languages these links are dead and can either be removed or need repointed to thailex.asia as well.
- I have set the xwiki link bot to run a report, and it should be available from User:COIBot/XWiki/thailex.info (when it has finished its crawling). There is a list of links on the top 40 wikis at https://wikipediatools.appspot.com/linksearch.jsp?radio=on&set=top40&link=thailex.info — billinghurst sDrewth 10:12, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
inductance
I know the Wikipedia artical about inductance is incorrect. It says "inductance is the property of an electrical conductor by which a change in current flowing". This is absolutely incorrect and a common misconception.
First, the unit of inductance is the Henry. The Henry is a Weber per Ampere. In other words, inductance is a measure of of how much magnetic field for a given level of current.
Second, based in the Wikipedia definition of inductance, a direct currect (no change in current) circuit would not have inductance. Inductance exist in direct current circuits.
Finally, the words inductance and induction are simlar and the root of much confusion. Induction is about a change in current, inductance is not.

searching
Good afternoon! I am Crosstor editor Esperanto little Hungarian. In search of the perfect Hungarian pages: for example, if I enter in, for example Buda, immediately appear in the articles Budakeszi, Budaörs... The same side of the Esperanto does not work: I write in, an icon appears, which inhibits the appearance of articles. Only when you look, you press enter. This result is not good, because if you take too long looking for the article, you need to write down if you are looking for short article, the search engine finds and displays, but it has not shown that the name which included articles. Sometimes the English side is looking for, there are also a perfect operation, only the bad side of Esperanto. How can it be prevented from blocking the icon in the search? The icon ear if I activate, the following options are available:
- Esperanto let-
- Esperanto writing the letter h
- Esperanto fund regulations
- Esperanto full
- Esperanto letters with an q
- Esperanto letters with an x
- Use CTRL + M
- Other languages
I work for Esperanto letters with an x and Google Chrome. Sincerely,--Crosstor (talk) 11:49, 28 September 2015 (UTC) eo:Uzanto Crosstor

Error when connecting to old database
I’m using
MediaWiki: 1.17.0
PHP: 5.3.28-nmm4 (fpm-fcgi)
MySQL: 5.6.24-nmm1-log
on um-bruch.net/uwiki
One year ago my webhoster told:
“- Please do not use the "AddHandler php4-cgi .php" command line in your
.htaccess file anymore. Instead you need to alter the command line into
"AddHandler php5-cgi .php".
and
2) After the server update you are able to use PHP 5.4 and PHP 5.5 (in
CGI mode), the latest versions of PHP.
3) MySQL is going to be updated from 5.1 to 5.5. This will not lead to
any expected errors.
After the server-update my wiki did not work anymore.
My webhoster helped with an addition of some .htaccess files to my wiki installation path and the root. But still some problems remain.
I decided to install the newest wiki version as test with a new empty database.
MediaWiki: 1.25.2
PHP: 5.6.13-nmm4 (fpm-fcgi)
MySQL: 5.6.24-nmm1-log
on um-bruch.net/twiki
It is running without any problems.
But when I am trying to connect it to my old database (by change in the LocalSettings.php) I get an error.
“A database query error has occurred. This may indicate a bug in the software.”
My question:
Was there any change in the structure of the database since 1.17.0?
The number of tables is still 49, but I do not now, wether changes are made in the relations or the table definitions.
Is there any other way to update the database to wiki 1.25.2?
I'm grateful for any help.

API to get links of a page not working (only for some titles!)
Hello,
The following API call has been working well for me till today morning.
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&prop=links&pllimit=max&titles=Paris
Now, I get the following response:
{
"batchcomplete": "", "query": { "pages": { "22989": { "pageid": 22989, "ns": 0, "title": "Paris" } } }, "limits": { "links": 500 }
}
Interestingly, if I change the titles parameter to have another value like 'London', or 'Louvre', or 'Amsterdam' I get proper results. Wikipedia server does not like Paris or I'm doing something silly here :-). I have tried this from API sandbox, curl and python scripts. Same response. I tried it from my friend's phone; same response. Anyone has a clue as to what's going wrong here? Thanks for your time folks.

Wrong parentid values in enwiki XML dumps
Hi,
I'm working with the enwiki-20151002 dump [1], and have noticed many cases (around 170k) where the parentid value in a revision is wrong.
Easiest example to verify this: In file enwiki-20151002-pages-meta-history14.xml-p003920011p003924999.7z (16MB), you may find this:
<revision> <id>263728646</id> <parentid>246108841</parentid> <timestamp>2009-01-13T02:52:26Z</timestamp> ... </revision>
However, by inspecting the pages history [2], you may see that 246108841 is not the correct parent, but rather there are two other revisions that happened between 246108841 and 263728646.
Thx, ealmansi
- You should probably report this issue on the phabricator:. Ruslik (talk) 18:52, 18 November 2015 (UTC)
- Before reporting, make sure you understand what rev_parent_id is for: mw:Manual:Revision_table#rev_parent_id. Nemo 10:27, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
urgent !!! How to realize multi-language in one wiki site
Dear all,
Plz help me ...
right now , I have created EN WIKI for my products. But I'm wondering to know how can I add Chinese options in the same WIKI site?
I don't like two sites for different languages.
Could anybody tell me how to do it ?
- Localisation is automatically available in 350 languages, no need to do anything. If you want to run a multilingual wiki, see mw:MLEB; if you want to make your wiki Chinese, see mw:Manual:$wgLanguageCode or redo the installation. Nemo 10:27, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
Windows 10 Store App Source Code?
Greetings and Happy Holiday!
I want to create a Universal Windows Store App for Windows 10 of my wiki like the one for Wikipedia on the Store. I found this github link. I just want to make sure this is the compatible source code for Windows 10. Thanks friends!--75.73.139.70 01:13, 27 November 2015 (UTC)
- Probably nobody tested the app with Windows 10 (are you sure you want?). It's your opportunity: let us know what happens. Nemo 10:27, 8 December 2015 (UTC)
something wrong about MediaWiki
I am an administrator of cdo wikipedia. I find something wrong with the namespace "MediaWiki". It should be displayed as "MediaWiki" instead of "媒體維基" (error example). I don't know where (which page) to fix it. Can you tell me?--el caballero de los Leones (talk) 09:35, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, if "媒體維基" is an incorrect translation of MediaWiki, you should either use a correct translation of the word or then default namespace name, that is "MediaWiki". You should then follow instructions on Requesting wiki configuration changes. --Stryn (talk) 11:11, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
Two factor authentication
Will wikimedia and wikipedia particulary support this technology? Is it in todo list? Some accounts (administrators e. g.) are more valuable and must be secured stronger. Yanpas (talk) 09:06, 26 December 2015 (UTC)
- @Yanpas: Good suggestion. In fact, this topic has been brought up several times in different venues. It's not currently possible to enable it on SUL-enabled wikis, however, because the relevant extension (mw:Extension:OATHAuth) is still immature and does not support CentralAuth wikis. If you want to try it out, please do so on wikitech: which has the extension enabled (Note that it's not SUL-enabled, so you'll have to create a separate account there). Inserimento link
Salve. Vorrei inserire un link che indirizza a sito esterno in un testo. Ho già provato più volte ma viene considerato come indirizzo pubblicitario. Come risolvere?
il link è questo: http://bandadicropani.jimdo.com ho provato a creare una pagina anche ma non mi accetta i link. testi e link sono originali e non sono usati a scopo pubblicitario.
Is it possible to download a raw dataset of all world government organizations (city, state, province, etc.)?
If there is not a data value indicating it's a government organization, are all URLS in a table so that I can programmatically deduce which URLs are government, therefore indirectly indicating all government organizations?
thanks,
