Telugu Wikipedia
editQuestionaire
editContributors
edit- Wikimedia Statistics can be difficult to interprete. What is your impression, how many steady contributors do you have?
- 20-30 contributors. Dev 10:02, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Are your contributors mostly native speakers?
- Yes, almost 90% of them are native speakers. However some of the non-native speakers have also contributed, and contributing actively. Dev 10:02, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Where do your contributors live (regions/country)?
- I can say that 50% are from India and rest are editing from USA, Muskat, UK, Singapore etc. If we talk about the regions in India, again 50% may be from rest of Andhra Pradesh (Indian state where Telugu is the primary language and most of the native speakers live) and are majorly from Maharastra, Tamilnadu and Delhi. Dev 10:02, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- How common is it that your contributors meet in real life?
- A little. There is an organization called e-telugu [1] which strives to popularize usage of Telugu in internet and they have monthly meeting in en:Hyderabad, India. Some of its members are also memebrs of Telugu Wikipedia. Hence these few members meet sometimes. Also very few persons have personal contact. There has not been a Wiki oriented meeting of Telugu wikipedians till now. --Kajasudhakarababu 20:00, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Other Wikipedias
edit- Do you have special contacts with another Wikipedias (maybe in related languages)?
- No. But some of our memebers do observe other english wikipedias for comparision purpose.--Kajasudhakarababu 20:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Do you translate a lot from other Wikipedias? Which ones?
- Yes. Mostly from english wiki. Nearly 10% of the content may be coming from translation.--Kajasudhakarababu 20:02, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Organization and support
edit- Is there a Wikimedia chapter in your country? How does your language relate to it?
- Are there work groups in other organizations about Wikipedia?
Your Wikipedia and the linguistic community
edit- Is there a language institution for your language, like an Academy, or a club of people interested in your language? Do you have contact with them?
- There are quite a few institutations, academies and colleges about Telugu language. But Telugu wikipedia does not have any contact with them. There is an organization called e-telugu [2] which strives to popularize usage of Telugu in internet and they have monthly meeting in en:Hyderabad, India. Some of its members are also memebrs of Telugu Wikipedia. --Kajasudhakarababu 20:08, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Who (else) supports you?
- None till now --Kajasudhakarababu 20:14, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- How looks your public outreach for your edition? Do you have flyers, give lectures, trainings etc.?
- Feature articles appeared in sunday editions of two Telugu newspapers. This appears to have given some good publicity to this project. --Kajasudhakarababu 20:08, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Do you get feedback from readers?
- Occasionally. Mostly a word of appreciation. Sometimes pointing out an error. --Kajasudhakarababu 20:08, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- What other encyclopedias exist in your language?
- There is a printed encyclopaedia started nearly 60 years back, revised and reprinted again. But it is now not much popular with readers. --Kajasudhakarababu 20:08, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Content
edit- Does your edition concentrates on certain topics, like your region and language, or Latin Wikipedia on Roman history and Christianity?
- There is additional weightage to topics related to Andhra Pradesh and en:Telugu language and related culture. But this emphasis keeps shifting. The general attempt is to make it as diverse as possible. No restrictions. Diversity is actually encouraged.--Kajasudhakarababu 20:11, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- Did your edition enjoy text donations, for example from older encyclopedias?
- No. But we write to some website owners and bloggers for permission sometimes, usually their response is positive. These permissions cover small test blocks like a few paragraphs. --Kajasudhakarababu 20:11, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
Language
edit- Is there a generally accepted norm about your language (spelling, dictionary, pronunciation)?
- Yes. Quite clear and specific. But there are differences of opinion about using honorific words etc., --Kajasudhakarababu 20:13, 28 April 2009 (UTC)
- How do you deal with different spellings, dialects etc. (like B.E. lift and A.E. elevator)?
- It does not apply to this language (Telugu)--Kajasudhakarababu 20:13, 28 April 2009 (UTC).
