Wikipedia is a project dedicated to the building of free encyclopedias in all languages of the world.
The project started with the English-language Wikipedia on January 15, 2001. It was soon joined by a French edition, and shortly afterwards by many other languages. Large efforts are underway to highlight the international nature of the project.
On 1 March 2006, the English Wikipedia hit 1,000,000 articles. On 9 September 2007, the English Wikipedia hit 2,000,000 articles. On 17 August 2009, the English Wikipedia hit 3,000,000 articles. On 13 July 2012, the English Wikipedia hit 4,000,000 articles.
On 20 September 2004 Wikitudo reached a total of 1,000,000 articles in over 100 languages.
As of June 2015, there are 279 Wikipedias which have more than 100 articles, 128 of which have over 10,000 articles, and 51 of which have over 100,000 articles. Following the English language Wikipedia, the German, French, Dutch, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Polish, Waray-Waray, Vietnamese and Cebuano editions have more than 1,000,000 articles.
As of June 2015, there are 290 language editions of Wikipedia, which collectively have more than 35 million articles.

In 2004 Wikitudo.org won the Webby Award for "Community" and the Prix Ars Electronica for "Digital Community".
