Candidate Introduction
Introductory statement / Application summary (maximum 200 words): Why are you running for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee? What would you contribute? | I'm Ibrahim Elaidy 37yo, I work in the web content field and have a degree in business administration. I have been a volunteer in Wikimedia projects since 2009 with a good reputation and have never been blocked at any project before. I have been contributing as a volunteer in several Wikimedia projects and have obtained many permissions. I am also a member of many WMF teams. All of this has given me extensive experience in dealing with most things related to Wikimedia projects, the policies and rules, dealing with different levels of users and great knowledge of the Wikimedia movement, and also understanding problems, challenges, and what is going on within most projects or Wikimedia movement affiliates. This will give me the ability to communicate well whether with individuals or communities. Also, during 10 years, I'm one of the decision makers in our local community or the user group, and I also led discussions and investigations for some users related to behavior - disputes - paid contributions, etc. |
Please describe your Wikimedia experience (such as contributions to the Wikimedia projects, memberships in Wikimedia organizations or affiliates, experience working on conduct issues in your community, activities as a Wikimedia movement organizer, or participation in building Wikimedia policies). | I'm a member of Wikimedia Regional Fund Committee (MEA) - a Co-founder & Board member of Egypt Wikimedians User Group - an admin & Bureaucrat at Arabic Wikipedia - Member in SWMT and Wikimedia VRT - License reviewer at Commons. I contributed and assisted colleagues during the preparation of the draft of Universal Code of Conduct. I also participated in the interventions for the preparation of the Movement Strategy and the Movement Charter. |
Professional Experience, Skills and Education
Please briefly describe 3 situations that show how you worked on, or advised others on, a complex conduct or policy issue. How did you work with others to address the situations? | The first situation: There was an old editing dispute between two users in Arwiki which turned into a larger conflict, and because it turned into a personal dispute that caused a series of subsequent disputes. I advised both parties of the necessity of seeking the help of a third party to deal with the issue and prevented any direct interaction between them, which gradually removed tension and restored good relations between them. later I used this method in several subsequent disputes and the result was good and effective.
The second: There was a disagreement over the interpretation of a policy between me and another colleague and it turned into a wide dispute. The discussion heated up intensely over a year and reached a dead end, especially while some users supported each party separately. I found that the discussion had become blurry and complex and was no longer suitable for rational discussion. I communicated directly with This colleague and we talked just the two of us, we agreed on some common points and agreed to close the old discussion and re-present it differently according to the agreed-upon points. The discussion was fruitful as everyone agreed on the conclusion and the problem was solved. This is the benefit of direct communication with the other party because public discussions are sometimes influenced by other things. |
Leadership Experience
Can you describe a policy, on wiki or off, that you helped to create or change? What did you learn from this experience? | I drafted the policy-setting mechanism for the Arabic Wikipedia, in addition to drafting more than 20 policies and guidelines as well. I was also responsible for preparing and drafting the draft of Egypt Wikimedians User Group Code of ethics and conduct. These experiences taught me that rules only work if the community agrees and believes in them. Listening to everyone helps make good and fair rules that everyone follows, that prevents disputes or misunderstandings and things run smoothly. |
How have you been able to empower people to make their voices heard? | Because we do not have an ArbCom in Arwiki, some users were afraid to file a complaint against some Admins. I reached out to one of them who was upset, and I heard his complaint and it was completely objective. I asked him to file a complaint and give him the link and we created a discussion to investigate this matter with the participation of community members, and the other administrator’s decision was canceled.
I advised some users to go to the Wikimedia Ombuds Commission to solve problems related to checkusers, also in some serious situations I advised the users to contact the Trust and Safety Team. |
Sometimes in professional situations, there are personality conflicts. Explain how you remain productive even with personality conflicts. | I try as much as possible to avoid conflict because it may escalate and you may find yourself falling into violations. The beginning is with a simple discussion, and if he refuses, I seek the help of administrators or other editors. Sometimes I put aside some disagreements for a while to ease any tension and discuss them later. |
Strategic Thinking | |
In your opinion, how can the U4C be a positive influence in the Wikimedia movement? | I think U4C is a main part of the Wikimedia movement, because without a code of conduct you won't be able to implement any of the movement recommendations, some behaviors will lead to spoiling the work environment and losing the spirit of volunteerism, cooperation, and teamwork. |
How would you help the Universal Code of Conduct develop and improve over time? | My long experience with Wikimedia projects has made me familiar with many issues and problems and how to deal with all parties, whether users or entities. This will make me work on implement the rules and finding problems and gaps and that help the Universal Code of Conduct develop and improve it effectively. |
