Wiki Advanced Training was conducted on 29 June – 1 July 2018 at Ranchi, India. The theme of this workshop was Wikipedia content creation and improvement. In our last Impact report, we discussed this workshop very briefly in just one sentence. In the following paragraphs, we'll give you more details about the workshop and specially the follow-up activities which took place between 1 July and 31 December 2018.

Activity
Wikipedia is one of the most important Wikimedia projects, and almost all Indian Wikimedia communities are actively working on Wikipedia. Wiki Advanced Training or WAT 2018 was a residential training workshop for experienced Wikipedians in India. The aim of the workshop was to train and groom these Wikipedians to write even better quality content on Wikipedia. 23 Wikimedians from 12 Indian language communities participated in this workshop. 4 of them were female.

Some of the topics discussed during the workshop were: Wikipedia article structure, Good article, core Wikipedia policies such as Neutral point of View, Verifiability, getting resource support from The Wikipedia Library. You may see a narrative report of the event here on the event page.

After the event, a couple of participants wrote detailed reports on their participation and learning experience. Please see a graphic report by Punjabi Wikimedian User:Manavpreet Kaur here. Kannada Wikimedian User:Vikashegde wrote this report.

Feedback
We got a good number of feedback before and after the workshop. Right after the event announcement, we go a constructive feedback about it's naming—

The name of this event should be changed from Wiki to Wikipedia, Because in this event Scholarships given to only those volunteers who working on Wikipedia.

The idea was in every iteration we'll focus on one project such as Wikipedia, Wikisource, Wikinews etc. It was a mistake from our side not to complete clarify it right in the beginning.

Post-workshop we requested the participants to share feedback on-Meta. This was the first time we requested to share feedback on Meta-wiki, with an option to share private feedback/grievances over email. All the feedback we received may be seen here.

Notable outputs After the workshop we saw a few follow-up events and activities such as:

  • Indian independence edit-a-thons:
  • Indic Tech-Com: Indic Tech-Com is a group who provide technical support to Indic Wikimedia projects and the community. They develop and fix scripts and gadgets on request. The group was formed after interaction and discussion.
  • Wiki Women for Women Wellbeing 2018:
  • Kannada community follow-up meetup:
