A lot of Wikipedia's readers don't realise that Wikipedia is not a commercial organisation. Unlike the vast majority of websites, Wikipedia relies almost solely on generous contributions from donors across the planet.
It really amazes me to think that it has been almost ten years now since the dawn of this collaboration. In those ten years, several million people (a community potentially larger than some of the countries able to access the website) have combined, an edit here, an edit there, to create a free collection of knowledge compiled from the best minds in the world - people like you.
Whether you need to research that unknown team you've been drawn in your first match of the season, you need to find information on an obscure fungus, or you just want to find out who's been voted off your nation's annual talent contest - there's a huge chance it will be available in one place, updated within minutes by someone, somewhere in the world.
One of the best parts of Wikipedia is the lack of advertising; the information is presented cleanly and consistently. However, this does lead to a lack of income. That's why we ask you to give a little (or a lot!) to benefit the cause. The fifth most read website on the internet, unfortunately, cannot run itself. The target is high, but with your help, we can ensure the future of this limitless collaboration.
Thank you for using Wikipedia; you drive this website.
